BofA Securities analyst Justin Post noted Thursday that President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs, keeping the 10% baseline in place. Per Trump, the pause comes after 75-plus countries called U.S. officials to negotiate trade agreements, even as he hiked tariffs on Chinese imports to 125% in response to China's 84% rate on U.S. goods.
The Nasdaq jumped over 12% as investors recalibrated tariff and recession fears. Talks are underway with key Asian partners like Vietnam (tariff at 46%), Japan (24%) and India (26%), with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent set to meet them soon, per Bloomberg. While China tariffs remain a risk, broader negotiations could help online retailers stabilize supply chains.

In the case where the Street can anticipate a resolution to all tariff issues over the next 12-18 months, Post noted the most significant opportunity for more discretionary names in his e-commerce coverage group — ACV Auctions Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ACVA#NYSE">ACVA</a>), Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), RH (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RH#NYSE">RH</a>), Wayfair Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/W#NYSE">W</a>) — that have been hardest hit over the past three weeks.
Amazon&#8217;s retail does have significant exposure to China (China sellers could be over 30% of third-party sellers), but pauses on tariffs in other countries will allow for product substitution. Key questions for first-quarter earnings and second-quarter outlooks will be to what degree consumers have pulled forward spending ahead of expected tariffs, and how much of a pass Street will give companies on second-quarter guidance.
As advertising spending is cyclical and depends, in part, on business confidence, Post expects some weakness in second-quarter brand advertising.
Post noted that the announced tariff pause could help soften the potential impact in the second quarter and drive some upside to his recently revised estimates, benefiting the entire sector.
Online media companies, including Pinterest Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PINS#NYSE">PINS</a>), Reddit Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDDT#NYSE">RDDT</a>), and Snap Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNAP#NYSE">SNAP</a>), which have less robust ad auctions and/or higher brand exposure, likely have the most to gain from an improving macro outlook.
Of the three, Post preferred Pinterest for a reduction in tariffs, given its exposure to home goods and fashion with favorable risk/reward. He noted that the group — including Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) — was up between 10% and 25% initially on the tariff pause news, but the stocks remain well below Feb. 14 levels.

The S&amp;P 500's fireworks this week may have lit up Wall Street, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/jeremy-siegel">but Jeremy Siegel</a> isn't buying into the revelry just yet.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Pause Doesn&#8217;t Equal Peace: Trump's Tariff Timeout Isn't The Endgame</h1>
Despite a 9.5% one-day rally that put the index in rarefied post-World War II territory, Siegel <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/10/jeremy-siegel-says-stocks-are-not-out-of-the-woods-yet-due-to-difficult-china-negotiations-ahead.html">told</a> CNBC's Squawk Box that investors celebrating a tariff truce may be getting ahead of themselves. "We're not out of the woods," the WisdomTree chief economist warned, pointing to the looming uncertainty in U.S.-China trade negotiations.
President Donald Trump's 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs sparked the market&#8217;s surge, but with the 10% tariff now permanent and China countering with 84% on U.S. goods, this is hardly a peace treaty. 
According to Siegel, investor sentiment remains shaky, still reeling from the initial tariff shock. That means the S&amp;P 500, down 11% from its highs and still negative for April, may struggle to reclaim its February peak anytime soon.

The market's next inflection point? Likely July 9, when the next tariff round could escalate tensions further.
For investors riding the broader index rebound, ETFs like the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>) and Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) have all surged — but Siegel suggests caution.
For investors looking to play defense, sector ETFs like the Invesco Bloomberg Pricing Power ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/POWA#NYSE">POWA</a>) or the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) may offer some shelter.
On the flip side, those still leaning into the rebound could watch the iShares U.S. Technology ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IYW#NYSE">IYW</a>) as tech has led past snapbacks, but remains exposed to global trade flows.
This isn't an "all clear" for risk-on strategies. Bulls may want to wait for more than just headlines before charging back in.

The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/09/40961791/the-biggest-crypto-crime-cases-in-2024-heists-frauds-and-multi-million-dollar-scams-shake-">New York State Department of Financial Services</a> (DFS) has fined Block, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XYZ#NYSE">XYZ</a>) $40 million for violations tied to its anti-money laundering and virtual currency compliance protocols on the Cash App platform.
The enforcement <a href="https://www.dfs.ny.gov/reports_and_publications/press_releases/pr202504101">action</a> follows a state-led investigation revealing significant regulatory gaps in customer identification and transaction monitoring, increasing the risk of illicit financial activity.
According to DFS Superintendent Adrienne A. Harris, the fine addresses years of insufficient oversight at Cash App, particularly in handling high-risk Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) transactions and managing transaction alerts during the app's rapid expansion between 2019 and 2020.
"Compliance functions must keep pace with company growth or expansion," said Harris. "The rapid growth of Block's Cash App absent a robust compliance function created risk and vulnerabilities that violated the rules financial services companies operating in New York must adhere to."

The state's probe found that Block failed to perform adequate customer due diligence and lacked effective systems to identify and prevent money laundering. 
One critical concern was the processing of anonymous, high-risk Bitcoin transactions without sufficient scrutiny, along with a significant backlog of unreviewed alerts that went unaddressed for a prolonged period.
Under the settlement, Block must appoint an independent monitor to oversee the development of an improved compliance program. 
DFS said the company has cooperated throughout the investigation and is already investing in corrective measures.
