Slowing growth, a shaky valuation and high receivables could cloud the latest listing attempt by China's top provider of reusable packaging materials for the auto sector

Alsco Pooling Service Co. Ltd.'s&nbsp;second application to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, filed last week, marked a comedown from its original application last November, when the company's business was riding high but later got tripped up by compliance issues. Notably, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www1.hkexnews.hk/app/sehk/2025/107436/documents/sehk25061301464.pdf">latest filing</a>&nbsp;shows Alsco's business slowed sharply in the second half of last year, after the earlier application showed a much stronger start to 2024.
But after some house cleaning to address the earlier compliance issues, Alsco may still beat some of its competitors in the logistics-sharing business to market, like&nbsp;Lalatech, which has also made several applications but has yet to list in Hong Kong. Alsco's close ties to China's auto sector, now leading the world in both production and exports, could give its IPO some positive momentum.
Chairman Sun Yan'an founded a logistics equipment and services company in 1998 that would eventually become Alsco. Since then, his company, formerly known as Anwood Logistics, has risen to become China's largest container and packaging sharing firm for the auto industry.&nbsp;
Alsco manufactures foldable containers and boxes as well as metal racks and specialized containers that can be used by auto companies and later returned for reuse. Their foldability means they can be easily shipped to and from customers, and customers pay based on the number of times the packaging containing their products is circulated.
Actual containers are made from high-strength polypropylene materials at Alsco's major factory in Lianyungang, one of China's top ports in Jiangsu province. A second factory in Yancheng, built in 2022 down the coast from Lianyungang, recycles plastic parts for reuse.&nbsp; This "returnable" model is aimed primarily at small and medium sized suppliers of batteries and other products to the major auto brands.
According to independent research in the listing document, Alsco was the second largest shared packaging company in China last year and the largest provider for the auto services market. The company controlled 1% of China's overall logistics packaging solution market that was worth $118.7 billion. The big majority of that market, 93.7%, was for container sales.
Rather than competing with an estimated 3,500 companies that supply containers to the domestic market, Alsco was among the first in the shared container services market – which the company refers to as "pooling." The market size of this niche was a much smaller 16.9 billion yuan ($2.3 billion) in 2023, with Alsco as a leader in the category.
Alsco also engages in the larger container industry, but only 12.9% of its revenue in 2023 and 8.5% in 2024 came from container sales. Most of the rest came from its "pooling" or sharing services.
The intervening six months since Alsco's initial IPO application have clearly tarnished the outlook for the listing. The original IPO application may have been tripped up in January, when the China Securities and Regulatory Commission (CSRC) raised questions about some of Alsco's practices, including equity transfers, private placements and disputes regarding its employee stock ownership plan.
The company appears to have cleaned up those issues since then. But as we've already noted, the latest listing document includes data for all of last year, as well as selected disclosure through April 2025, which reveal a business slowdown in the second half of the year.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Revenue growth slowdown</h4>
Notably, Alsco's revenue growth slowed sharply in the second half of the year from the first half, and its profit also began to contract. Alsco reported its revenue for all 2024 rose 5% to 837.6 million yuan, representing a sharp slowdown from its 17% growth in the first half of the year. Its annual profit of 50.7 million yuan was down 21% year-over-year, reversing its 80% profit growth in the first half of the year.&nbsp;
One issue dogging the company is its receivables, which remain stubbornly high. Its largest customer, which appears to be automotive giant BYD, switched its payment method from bank transfer to bills receivable in 2024, with its credit period extended from 30 days to 60 days.
After that, Alsco's accounts and notes receivable increased by 6% year-on-year to 382.4 million yuan in 2024. Its accounts and notes receivables equaled 72% of its current assets at the end of last year – well above the 10% to 15% range generally considered healthy. Turnover periods for the company's trade and bill receivables increased as well, from 159.9 days in 2023 to 167.9 days in 2024, also well above the 30 to 60 days considered healthy.
Alsco's latest listing document shows it has tried to tackle its high level of outstanding payments this year. The company said it was able to settle 83.3% of its trade receivables, worth 312.9 million yuan, by the end of April this year. Alsco's high level of receivables may reflect difficulties being faced by China's auto industry, which is suffering from big overcapacity built up after years of explosive growth.
Alsco's valuation based on its various financing rounds and share transfers has been unsteady as well. Its Series A financing round in 2017 valued it at 540 million yuan. That rose to 800 million yuan during its Series B round in July 2022, when investment from municipal entities in the company's hometown of Suzhou gave those entities about 10% of the company. But the valuation sank to 672 million yuan in September and October 2022, based on two equity transfers at that time, according to media sources.
In the early 2020s, Suzhou set the goal of building up its auto industry with a policy called the Suzhou Automobile Complete Vehicle, Electronics and Parts Industry Innovation Cluster Action Plan (2023-2025). It helped Alsco launch its recycling facility, with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons of automotive plastic pellets and 2,000 tons of hollow board linings.
Despite China's economic slowdown and problems facing its auto industry, the country's sharing economy for logistics companies is far from dead. Hong Kong-based Lalatech, which operates a network of logistics vans for hire, similar to Uber's car-sharing network, submitted its fifth application for a Hong Kong IPO in April, with heavyweights Goldman Sachs, BofA Securities and JPMorgan as joint underwriters.
The similar&nbsp;Gogox Holdings&nbsp;(2246.HK), which went public in July 2022, has seen its share price drop to HK$3.90 from its IPO price of HK$21.60, which doesn't bode too well for the other shared-economy logistics companies. But for now, at least, Alsco is probably hoping its recent housecleaning to address earlier compliance issues will be good enough to woo investors to its second listing attempt despite its recent business slowdown.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KMX#NYSE">KMX</a>) shares climbed on Friday after the used car giant delivered better-than-expected first-quarter earnings and revenue, driven by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/06/b46022246/carmax-reports-first-quarter-fiscal-year-2026-results">strong retail sales and improved margins</a>.
The Richmond, Virginia-based used car retailer registered earnings per share of $1.38, beating the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">analyst consensus estimate of $1.21</a>. Quarterly sales of $7.55 billion outpaced the analyst consensus estimate of $7.47 billion.
Retail used unit sales rose by 9.0%, while comparable store used unit sales grew by 8.1%. Wholesale unit sales also saw a modest increase of 1.2%.

Combined retail and wholesale used vehicle unit sales were 379,727, an increase of 5.8% from the prior year&#8217;s first quarter.
Total gross profit increased 12.8% to $893.6 million, driven by higher unit volumes and strong unit margin performance. Gross margin expanded to 11.8% from 11.1% in the year-ago period.
The company achieved a gross profit of $2,407 per retail used unit, up $60 per unit.
Gross profit per wholesale unit remained historically strong at $1,047, though it declined by $17 per unit.
The company purchased a total of 336,000 vehicles from consumers and dealers, marking a 7.2% increase. This included 288,000 vehicles bought from consumers, up 3.3%, and 48,000 acquired through dealers, up 38.4%.
CarMax Auto Finance income decreased 3.6% to $141.7 million as an increase in the provision for loan losses outweighed growth in CAF&#8217;s net interest margin percentage.
This quarter&#8217;s provision for loan losses was $101.7 million compared to $81.2 million in the prior year&#8217;s first quarter.
In the first quarter, the company repurchased 3.0 million shares for $199.8 million, with $1.74 billion remaining under its buyback authorization as of May 31, 2025.
In the quarter under review, the firm&nbsp;opened two new stand-alone reconditioning/auction centers. The centers are located in El Mirage, Arizona, supporting the Phoenix metro market, and Midlothian, Texas, supporting the Dallas metro market.
The company exited the quarter with cash and equivalents worth $262.819 million, compared with 246.960 million at the end of February 28.
Long-term debt (excluding the current portion) at the end of the quarter was $1.366 billion, contracting from $1.570 billion at the end of February 28.

Semler Scientific (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMLR#NASDAQ">SMLR</a>), one of the earliest publicly traded U.S. companies to adopt Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) as a primary treasury reserve asset, announced Thursday that it plans to accumulate at least 10,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2025 and expand that position to 105,000 BTC by the close of 2027. 
The company's <a href="https://ir.semlerscientific.com/news-releases/news-release-details/semler-scientificr-appoints-joe-burnett-director-bitcoin">strategy </a>echoes the aggressive accumulation paths taken by MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) and Metaplanet, signaling intensifying institutional competition in corporate Bitcoin treasuries.
Since adopting Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset in May 2024, Semler has achieved a 287% Bitcoin yield, generating an unrealized gain of $177 million as of June 3, 2025. 
"Since adopting the Bitcoin Standard, we have achieved approximately 287% BTC Yield and a $177 million BTC $ Gain through June 3, 2025," said Eric Semler, chairman of Semler Scientific. 
The firm currently holds 4,449 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $464 million, and plans to fund further acquisitions through equity offerings, debt financing, and operational cash flows.

Semler's strategy mirrors that of MicroStrategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder with approximately 592,100 Bitcoin, valued at over $61 billion at current prices. 
MicroStrategy, led by Michael Saylor, has inspired firms like Semler to treat Bitcoin as a long-term store of value, using debt and equity to fuel acquisitions. 
Similarly, Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has emerged as a major player, surpassing 10,000 Bitcoin in June 2025 and targeting 210,000 by 2027, equivalent to 1% of Bitcoin's 21 million fixed supply. 
Metaplanet's rapid accumulation, funded by a $5.4 billion share issuance, underscores Asia's growing appetite for corporate Bitcoin holdings.
Semler's announcement triggered an 11% surge in its stock price, closing at $28.53 on June 19, despite a 40% decline in 2025 overall. 
The company continues to operate its core healthcare business, marketing FDA-cleared products like QuantaFlo for cardiovascular diagnostics, which generates cash flow to support its Bitcoin strategy.

A stablecoin bill sprinting toward the legislative goal line could unleash trillions in global demand for U.S. Treasuries and cement the dollar's dominance in digital finance—at least if White House crypto adviser David Sacks gets his wish. But with President Donald Trump's family-linked crypto ventures casting a long political shadow, critics warn the future of fintech might come with a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/25/06/45995223/genius-stablecoin-bill-clears-senate-but-trumps-crypto-profits-loom-over-momentum">built-in conflict of interest</a>.
What Happened: Speaking to Bloomberg on Thursday, Sacks <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTBmFD7ZxZ4">said </a>the legislation, if signed into law by the House of Representatives, would provide the regulatory clarity needed to expand stablecoin issuance and institutional adoption.
The bet is that it will ultimately boost global use of U.S. dollar-based digital assets.
"There's already something like $250 billion in float of stablecoins… without there being a true regulatory framework in the United States," Sacks said. "I think you could see other economies start to dollarize from the bottom up… and that would create potentially trillions of dollars of new demand for U.S. Treasuries."
Sacks added that the bill would not only standardize audits and reserves for issuers but could also accelerate private sector involvement. 
"I think you'd see traditional financial players getting involved in it," he noted. "This would increase confidence in the industry."
He emphasized that the bill would move major stablecoin activity onshore and into a regulated framework.

Why It Matters: The bill faces opposition from most Democrats due to Trump's lucrative cryptocurrency ventures. World Liberty Financial, a firm his family runs, earned the president over $57 million last year. The firm also plans to launch <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44767925/trump-family-backed-stablecoin-usd1-nears-launch-as-world-liberty-financial-teases-airdrop">a stablecoin called USD1</a>.
Critics warn of a deepening conflict of interest as Trump's administration simultaneously rolls back crypto regulations while his financial ties to the sector grow. 
The GENIUS Act &#8220;contains no restrictions to bar elected officials and their families from owning, buying, selling, or otherwise participating in stablecoin business ventures or prevent foreign countries from currying favor with President Trump by using his stablecoin to funnel money to him,&#8221; according to a letter <a href="https://www.banking.senate.gov/newsroom/minority/forwarding-merkley-warren-trump-linked-crypto-deal-is-a-staggering-conflict-of-interest">published</a> in May from the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
In contrast, the bill&#8217;s supporters stress that the legislation strengthens consumer protections. If it passes, stablecoin issuers must maintain one-to-one reserves in U.S. bank accounts and undergo quarterly audits.
When asked about speculation about pairing the bill with broader market structure legislation, Sacks warned that combining the two could delay progress.
"The stablecoin bill is on the 10-yard line… the market structure bill hasn't even been taken up by the Senate," he said.
Sacks also pointed to the evolution of blockchain-based payments as a pivotal development enabled by the legislation. 
"Stablecoins will be used as payments… it's a payment system of the future," he said, calling it a faster and more efficient alternative to legacy systems.
He linked the legislative push to broader U.S. goals of maintaining competitiveness in financial innovation. "We don't want this innovation being driven offshore," he said. "The leading stablecoin issuer is offshore right now."

Although the electoral victory of now-President Donald Trump during the 2024 political campaign helped briefly invigorate the hydrocarbon sector, oil stocks eventually succumbed to downward pressure. With the Trump administration implementing sweeping tariffs on key economic partners, the paradigm shift in the geopolitical framework created a cloud of uncertainty. Cynically, though, escalating tensions in the Middle East have renewed interest in fossil fuels.
Last week, Israel<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/events/25/06/45964856/trump-asks-everyone-to-immediately-evacuate-tehran-odds-of-us-striking-iran-spike-on-crypto-betting-platform"> launched an attack on Iran</a>, targeting nuclear energy and military sites. Fundamentally, the Israeli government views Iran as an existential threat. For many Americans, though, the main concern is whether or not the U.S. will get dragged into the conflict. Recently, lawmakers — including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) —<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45988135/bernie-sanders-slams-israels-illegal-attack-on-iran-says-absolutely-imperative-that-the-united-states-not-be-dragged-into-this-war"> expressed deep reservations</a> about the attack and the possibility of U.S. involvement.
A major concern that could cynically bolster the price of oil is the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst-color/25/06/45940903/a-thin-strip-of-water-keeps-the-world-economy-on-edge-will-it-trigger-a-100-oil-shock"> strategic chokepoint</a> of the Strait of Hormuz. Located between Iran and Oman, this waterway narrows to just two shipping lanes of only 2 nautical miles each, which greatly endangers global oil flows. Commodity analyst Daan Struyven warned that if Iranian oil infrastructure is damaged, it's possible that Brent crude could briefly spike above $90 per barrel.
Even more worrying, a wider escalation of the conflict may impact the strait, which could then push the price into triple-digit territory. Notably, almost a third of the world's seaborne oil moves across the passageway, setting the stage for potential mass disruption.
Outside factors can also contribute to a bullish backdrop for the oil market. While the Federal Reserve has<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/macro-economic-events/25/06/46006680/powell-holds-line-on-interest-rates-blames-tariff-uncertainty-for-delay-in-cuts"> kept interest rates steady</a> due to inflation data not supporting rate cuts, shifts in economic viability may force the central bank into a more accommodative stance. If so, a dovish monetary backdrop could lift oil prices.
Still, not every data point supports hydrocarbons. A key factor to consider is supply. In recent years, U.S. oil production has<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/esg/23/12/36185311/crude-conundrum-us-oil-production-hits-record-levels-but-energy-stocks-arent-pumping"> hit record levels</a>, applying downward pressure on prices. As such, investors may have both fundamental and technical headwinds to consider. With the Trump administration's big push toward<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/04/44903411/trumps-2025-energy-policy-a-resurgence-of-fossil-fuel"> energy independence</a>, a risk exists that oil stocks could hit a technical plateau.
Moreover, it's worth pointing out the demand-side pressure. Thanks in part to the aforementioned tariffs, economic activity has slowed, leading to less consumption of oil. In addition,<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44755934/us-q1-ev-sales-data-shows-106-yoy-growth-tesla-experiences-decline-but-still-dominates-domestic-ev-sales"> electric vehicle sales are booming</a>, and there's little evidence that the trend is declining. More legacy automakers are entering the electric fray, which may eventually drag down oil prices.

When the movie first came out, many viewers saw it as an absurdist comedy. Many talked about doing great work, only to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/45726529/four-and-a-half-years-in-a-worker-sees-a-new-hire-earn-20-more-now-theyre-asking-if-loyalty-is-the-most-expensive-career-mistake">get tiny raises</a> or none at all. &#8220;I crunched for three months at the beginning of 2025, usually 10-hour days with a couple of 12-hour days&#8230; Hit the target on both [projects], got a 0.5% raise shortly after. Lowest I&#8217;ve ever gotten, in a year where I easily did my best work,&#8221; someone wrote.&nbsp;
Another added, &#8220;Got a huge promotion/raise I&#8217;d been trying and failing to get for 5 years&#8221;—but only after they stopped putting in effort entirely after their dad passed away.
Several said it outright: if you care too much, you&#8217;re either ignored or punished. &#8220;The squeaky wheel gets more work assigned to them for no additional pay or prospects for promotion.&#8221;

Others are focused on survival, not ambition. &#8220;You only have to work hard enough to be cheaper to keep than replace,&#8221; one comment read. And if there&#8217;s one consistent theme, it&#8217;s this: working hard doesn't guarantee anything.
One person summed up the entire vibe: &#8220;Watching that movie growing up it's like okay, that's kinda funny but he's not being serious. Now&#8230; now it's gospel.&#8221;

Taobao and Tmall, two core marketplaces operated by&nbsp;Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.&nbsp;(BABA.US; 9988.HK), recently entered a landmark partnership with lifestyle social media sensation&nbsp;RedNote, in the former's latest step to bring its core e-commerce services closer to consumers in their everyday lives. The tie-up is just the latest by two of China's largest e-commerce marketplaces, as they look for new and innovative ways to engage consumers through steps like integrating links to products in online conversations and videos.
At the same time, Taobao and Tmall are giving their thousands of online merchants better tools to make their marketing and back-office functions more efficient, often using the power of AI. A company spokesperson discussed those developments and more in a recent interview with Bamboo Works.
Q:&nbsp;Taobao and Tmall have recently announced a partnership with RedNote. Could you tell us more about the collaboration?
A: Taobao and Tmall's strategic partnership with RedNote represents a significant step in bridging content and commerce, offering consumers a seamless path from product discovery to purchase. The partnership enables merchants to embed product links from their Taobao and Tmall stores directly into recommendation posts on RedNote. Users can tap on these links and be redirected to the Taobao app to complete their purchases.
The partnership also includes the launch of joint merchant accounts and performance dashboards, allowing merchants to track the full journey from content exposure on RedNote to completed orders on the Taobao app in real-time. To further support merchant success, Taobao and Tmall will invest in amplifying hero products featured in RedNote posts, providing marketing resources and performance advertising tools to boost product visibility and engagement.
Q: Is this the first time Taobao and Tmall have struck such a major partnership with an outside company and what's the strategic importance?
A: We have a strong track record of successful partnerships with other platforms as part of our "user-first" strategy and merchant-friendly initiatives. Currently, Taobao and Tmall work with over 200 internet platforms, ranging from social media to mobile payments, supporting brand growth through expanded traffic channels, diversified content formats, and omni-channel operations.
Last September, Taobao and Tmall partnered with WeChat Pay, which expanded payment options for consumers. Additionally, last October, JD Logistics fully integrated with Taobao and Tmall, providing comprehensive services to Taobao and Tmall merchants that encompass the entire supply chain process, including warehousing, express delivery, and freight.
These developments represent significant milestones for China's cross-platform interconnectivity and enhancing Taobao and Tmall's competitiveness. All these partnerships create a more seamless and convenient experience for consumers while opening up new business opportunities for merchants, benefitting both.
Q: Do you see content-driven e-commerce as key to driving further user and business growth, and can you elaborate on how?
A: The partnership between Taobao and Tmall and RedNote bridges content with commerce, reflecting our commitment to supporting brands. At its TopTalk annual merchant conference in March, Tmall announced a series of new initiatives to support brands in 2025, including measures to attract users across channels and the extension of its commission rebate scheme to cover all categories.
Tmall President Liu Bo said the RedNote collaboration marks a new chapter in the marketplace's support for brand growth in 2025. He added that combining Taobao and Tmall's commerce expertise with RedNote's strength in lifestyle content, will help brands reach consumers more effectively and drive incremental growth.
Q: What other initiatives are Taobao and Tmall taking to enhance overall user experience and overall stickiness?
A: With 1 billion annual active consumers, Taobao and Tmall are continuously introducing new initiatives to enhance user experience. To convert more new users into loyal consumers and ultimately VIP members, Taobao and Tmall will increase investment in initiatives such as exclusive 88VIP benefits this year, aiming to cultivate repurchasing habits and deepen long-term engagement.
To boost repeat purchases, Tmall is increasing investment in not only platform-wide loyalty programs like 88VIP but also in brand-specific ones. Brands will be able to increase member engagement through more membership access points across Taobao search results, personalized recommendations, and shopping carts.
Q: I understand Alibaba has leveraged AI-powered technology to support merchants on your e-commerce platforms. Can you tell us more about these tools?
A: Taobao and Tmall have been integrating advanced AI technologies into every stage of the e-commerce process, from product recommendations and bidding optimization to content creation and performance analytics. These AI tools are designed to transform the digital shopping experience while boosting operating efficiency for merchants.
At the 2025 TopTalk conference, we introduced major upgrades to the merchant AI toolkit, including new image-to-video generation capabilities within the AI-generated Content (AIGC) tool and an advanced marketing bidding model that has demonstrated an average 12% boost in campaign ROI through automated bidding strategies. Additionally, our AI customer service chatbots have continued to evolve, offering increasingly sophisticated support.
To date, Taobao and Tmall's AI-powered e-commerce toolkit, launched last year, has served 7 million merchants. This May alone, merchants reduced their marketing expenses by generating over 100 million marketing images, videos, and text and conducted over 1.8 million AI agent services for traffic analysis and more.
Our new "Image-to-Video" AIGC product has generated over 1.5 million videos since its beta launch in April. It enables merchants to generate up to 20-second videos from one or more product images, and provides additional features such as one-click editing, smart refinement, and script-based production
Q: Can you tell us about your Quanzhantui marketing solution?
A: Quanzhantui launched in April 2024 and is an important AI-powered marketing tool to help merchants market effectively and drive business growth. Over 1.4 million merchants have enhanced their marketing efficiency with the aid of Quanzhantui. As our CEO Eddie Wu explained in our earnings call last August, achieving strong sales performance requires more than just having a product in place, and Quanzhantui can help merchants to streamline operations and optimize marketing efficiency.
For the quarter through March this year, our customer management revenue grew 12% year-over-year to 71.1 billion yuan ($9.8 billion), primarily driven by the improvement of take rate, which benefited from the impact of software service fees and the increasing penetration of Quanzhantui.
Q: How are these new products and offerings driving user growth?
A: Taobao and Tmall are committed to enhancing support for product launches, providing brands with powerful tools and resources to capture market share and attract new consumers. Specifically, Taobao and Tmall have introduced new marketing tools that leverage AI and data analytics, along with more prominent ad placements and an extended new product incubation cycle from 30 days to 90 days, giving brands more time to build awareness and gain traction.
The "Tmall Super Launch" campaign has been particularly successful, enabling 34,000 new products to achieve sales exceeding 10 million yuan each. This feature alone generated a total of 100 billion yuan in sales in 2024.
