Geoffrey Esper secured second place after eating 53 dogs and buns, while James Webb of Australia came in third place with 52 dogs and buns consumed.
Before that, in the women&#8217;s contest, Miki Sudo &#8212; the Empress of Eating &#8212; finished in first with a record-breaking 51 hot dogs and buns consumed. Mayoi Ebihara finished second with 37 hot dogs and buns. Michelle Lesco came in third with 23.5 hot dogs and buns.

In 2023, Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs and buns. But in 2021, he set the world record, having eaten 76. 
Like the competitors today, Chestnut is a big believer in the &#8220;dunk-and-shove&#8221; method. That&#8217;s when the competitors dip the frankfurters and buns into liquid before scarfing them down. 
Chestnut set the world record twice in the prior three contests: In 2018, he imbibed 74 hot dogs and buns, and in 2020, he swallowed 75 hot dogs and buns.
Chestnut signed a controversial sponsorship contract with meatless food company Impossible Foods, which offended Nathan&#8217;s Famous, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NATH#NASDAQ">NATH</a>) and barred him from competing this year. 
Whether he would&#8217;ve retained the title this year against Bertoletti, we&#8217;ll never know.

Nathan's Fourth Of July Hot Dog Eating Contest Crowns New King, Glizzy Queen Wins Again

For the first time in years, 16-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest champion Joey Chestnut will not be competing in the annual <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/06/39304472/netflix-announces-chestnut-vs-kobayashi-unfinished-beef-hot-dog-eating-contest-after-joey-c">Fourth of July tradition.</a>
Yet, the competitor — undefeated since 2015 — may have made a choice that embodies the spirit of the Fourth of July.
What Happened: The event&#8217;s orchestrator, Major League Eating, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/06/39304472/netflix-announces-chestnut-vs-kobayashi-unfinished-beef-hot-dog-eating-contest-after-joey-c">excluded Chestnut from the annual </a>Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Why snub your reigning champ from a 100-plus-year tradition? Turns out, Chestnut inked a sponsorship deal with plant-based food company Impossible Foods.
Impossible, a maker of plant-based meats, including hot dogs, is a Nathan's Famous (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NATH#NASDAQ">NATH</a>) rival. 
The event, which airs on Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) owned ESPN2 at 11 a.m. EST, takes place at the iconic Nathan's Famous flagship restaurant at 1310 Surf Avenue in Coney Island (UPDATE: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/restaurants/24/07/39637022/nathans-fourth-of-july-hot-dog-eating-contest-crowns-new-king-glizzy-queen-wins-again">Click here for our coverage of the winners</a>). 
Major League Eating reneged on the ban, sort of. The organization <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2024/07/03/joey-chestnut-hot-dog-eating-contest-nathans/74282210007/">told </a>USA Today that they offered to "set aside the exclusivity issue" and let Chestnut compete this year. However, Chestnut would have had to sign a multiyear deal with Nathan's before 2025 and end his partnership with Impossible.
Chestnut, who first entered the competitive eating scene in 2005 in a deep-fried asparagus eating contest, seemingly refused. 
The Nathan's Fourth of July hot dog eating contest has become an American holiday tradition. But it&#8217;s a Chinese conglomerate, WH Group, that owns Nathan&#8217;s Famous parent company, Smithfield Foods.
WH Group bought Smithfield in 2014 for $4.7 billion. It&#8217;s considered one of the largest acquisitions of a U.S. business by a Chinese firm.
Smithfield Foods is the largest pig and pork producer in the world. It also makes products under the banner of Eckrich and Nathan's Famous.
This begs a question: Is Chestnut a patriot for choosing Impossible, a company that makes its food in the U.S.?
Smithfield has factories in the U.S., Mexico and Europe.

Why It's Important: While Chestnut won't compete live in the annual New York event, he will be involved in an event of his own.
Chestnut will be competing against soldiers in El Paso, Texas at the Fort Bliss Army base. The 16-time champion will attempt to eat as many hot dogs and buns in five minutes as the winner of the Nathan's contest can in 10 minutes. It is unknown who is making these hot dogs. 
"If I'm going to eat on the Fourth of July, I'm going to eat hard," Chestnut said.
Geoffrey Esper and James Webb are the betting favorites in the Nathan's contest without Chestnut. Esper's over/under is set at 49.5 for the contest. Esper ate 49 hot dogs finishing second last year. Webb finished third last year with 47 hot dogs eaten.
In 15 of his 17 appearances at the Fourth of July contest, Chestnut has consumed at least 60 hot dogs. On six occasions, he has eaten 70 or more. There were only two instances where Chestnut ate fewer than 60 hot dogs, and he won the contest both times.
What&#8217;s Next: Chestnut will also compete in an upcoming rematch with six-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest winner Takeru Kobayashi.
On Sept. 2, the two will face off in their first rematch since 2009 in "Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef" on Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>).
It is worth noting that Chestnut will eat all-beef hot dogs in the Netflix challenge, but it is unknown who will be making them.

One of the great American traditions, the Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, will have a different feel in 2024 as Joey Chestnut will not participate for the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/06/39304472/netflix-announces-chestnut-vs-kobayashi-unfinished-beef-hot-dog-eating-contest-after-joey-c">first time in years.</a>
With Chestnut out, the betting odds look significantly different.
What Happened: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/23/07/33109620/july-fourth-hot-dog-eating-contest-joey-chestnut-wins-mens-competition-miki-sudo-named-wome">Sixteen-time champ</a> Chestnut won't compete in this year's Fourth of July event due to a dispute over his sponsorship by plant-based food company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/06/39304472/netflix-announces-chestnut-vs-kobayashi-unfinished-beef-hot-dog-eating-contest-after-joey-c">Impossible Foods.</a>
The contest, which is sponsored by Nathan's Famous (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NATH#NASDAQ">NATH</a>), will be very different in 2024 with Chestnut sitting out. Sudo is the heavy favorite to win her 10th championship in the women's event, which began in 2011.
Sudo has won all but one of the women's Fourth of July hot dog eating contests since 2014, with the lone exception being in 2021 when she sat out due to pregnancy.
In 2023, Sudo ate 39.5 hot dogs. Sudo holds the women's Fourth of July record at 48.5.
Tainted Championship?: This year will mark the first time in 23 years that neither Kobayashi or Chestnut competed in the event.
Chestnut has won the event every year since 2007, except in 2015 when he was defeated by Matt Stonie. That year, Chestnut ate 60 hot dogs, while Stonie managed to eat 62.
In 15 of his 17 appearances at the Fourth of July contest, Chestnut has consumed at least 60 hot dogs. On six occasions, he has eaten 70 or more. There were only two instances where Chestnut ate fewer than 60 hot dogs, and he won the contest both times.
Those figures would be enough for Chestnut to beat the competitors in this year's competition. Esper has a career high of 50 set in 2021. In last year's competition, both Esper and Webb failed to clear the 50 mark.
With Chestnut absent due to a decision by the Major League Eating organization rather than by his own choice, some might argue that this year&#8217;s winner should have an asterisk next to their victory.
This year's winner will likely be less recognized than past years as they ultimately aren't beating a legend like Kobayashi or Chestnut, but instead beating lesser competition.

Fourth Of July Hot Dog Eating Contest: Betting Odds Favor New Champion As Joey Chestnut Sits Out

Anyone who follows the world of competitive eating or has watched a July 4 hot dog eating competition in the last decade knows the name Joey Chestnut, which has become <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports-betting/23/07/33101513/joey-chestnuts-quest-for-16th-hotdog-championship-a-look-at-his-sponsorships-performance-s">synonymous with the sport.</a>
Known as one of the greatest competitive eaters of all time, Chestnut will not compete in this year's July 4 Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest.
What Happened: Many in the sports world were shocked to hear that Chestnut <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/06/39304472/netflix-announces-chestnut-vs-kobayashi-unfinished-beef-hot-dog-eating-contest-after-joey-c">will not be competing</a> in this year's event, which is hosted by sponsor Nathan's Famous (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NATH#NASDAQ">NATH</a>).
The competitive eater was told he couldn't compete due to his sponsorship with plant-based food company Impossible Foods, which has launched its own hot dog brand. Chestnut, who has won the event 16 times, will take part in another competition.
Streaming giant Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) announced it will host "Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef" on Sept. 2 at a to be named location
The new live head-to-head all-beef hot dog eating competition will pit Chestnut against Takeru Kobayashi, a rival who won the Nathan's July 4 contest six times. The two have not faced off against each other since 2009. Kobayashi announced his retirement from competitive eating last month citing health concerns, but wants one last shot at Chestnut.
"Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time," Kobayashi said in a statement <a href="https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/40336742/joey-chestnut-face-takeru-kobayashi-labor-day-hot-dog-battle">shared </a>by ESPN. "This rivalry has been brewing for a long time. Competing against Joey live on Netflix means fans all over the world can watch me knock him out."
Chestnut holds the world record at 76 hot dogs and buns consumed in 10 minutes at the July 4 event in 2021. A 16th title was won last year by Chestnut with 62 hots dogs and buns consumed.
Chestnut and Kobayashi tied in 2008 before Chestnut won in a controversial tie breaker.
ESPN, a unit of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>), may be the unfortunate casualty in the controversy. The media company airs the annual July 4 eating competition with millions often tuning in in recent years. ESPN recently renewed its rights to the competition through 2029. Without Chestnut, this year&#8217;s event could see significantly lower viewership.

Possible Winner: As much as Netflix could be a winner in the controversy, Impossible Foods has gained extra attention for free. If the saying of there's no such thing as bad publicity is true, Impossible Foods could be swimming in free PR and media coverage (including this article).
While many know of the plant-based food company, Chestnut's sponsorship and the added attention could create even more brand awareness for the company that is growing its product lineup and retail presence.
In a statement to ESPN, Impossible Foods said they support Chestnut "in any contest he chooses" and perhaps cleverly added "meat eaters shouldn't have to be exclusive to just one wiener."
Impossible was founded in 2011 and has been a rumored IPO over the years with multi-billion dollar valuations. The company <a href="https://impossiblefoods.com/media/news-releases/impossible-foods-closes-usd500m-in-new-funding-amid-record-growth">raised </a>$500 million in 2021 and has a roster of investors that includes Khosla Ventures, Bill Gates, UBS, Temasek, Coatue and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) venture capital arm Google Ventures.
Impossible has also added a lit of celebrities and athletes among its investors over the years. A 2020 funding round <a href="https://impossiblefoods.com/media/news-releases/2020-08/impossible-foods-closes-200-million-in-new-funding-to-accelerate-growth">listed </a>Kirk Cousins, Common, Paul George, Peter Jackson, Jay-Z, Mindy Kaling, Trevor Noah, Alexis Ohanian, Kal Penn, Katy Perry, Questlove, Serena Williams and more as Impossible investors.
Impossible could look to launch a new advertising campaign with Chestnut centered on the controversy to capitalize even more attention. 
Why It's Important: Nathan's is well-known as a top hot dog company and its name has become synonymous with the annual July 4 hot dog eating competition.
The decision to keep Chestnut out of the competition could have a lasting negative impact. Major League Eating and Nathan's have not banned Chestnut from the competition, but given the ultimatum that he end his sponsorship with Impossible Foods.
The timing for the controversy also came at a poor time for Nathan's as the company reported fourth-quarter and full-year financial results on Wednesday.
At a time when the company should have been celebrating its growing year-over-year revenue, investors may have noticed the calls to boycott the company <a href="https://x.com/search?q=boycott%20nathans&amp;src=typed_query">growing </a>on social media platform X.
Nathan's <a href="https://nathansfamous.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/nathans-famous-inc-reports-year-end-and-fourth-quarter-13">reported </a>fourth-quarter revenue of $28.99 million compared to $27.41 million in the previous year's fourth quarter. Earnings per share of 96 cents for the fourth quarter also came in ahead of the previous year's fourth quarter total of 80 cents per share.
NATH Price Action: Nathan's shares are down 1% to $69.27 on Thursday versus a 52-week trading range of $61.35 to $82.00. Nathan's stock is down 14.5% over the last year.
