The Japanese economy is set for moderate growth, helping the Bank of Japan (BOJ) continue with a tightening monetary policy that would otherwise choke the economy. As leading global economies measure the next steps for monetary easing, the BOJ is marching to the beat of its drum, providing numerous opportunities in the Asian currency market.
Daiwa Securities <a href="https://www.dir.co.jp/english/research/report/jmonthly/20250310_024964.html">predicts</a> Japan&#8217;s real GDP growth of 0.7% for the fiscal year 2024, 1.3% in 2025, and 1.1% in 2026. This continued expansion at a controlled pace stems from improving household incomes, government stimulus measures, and a strong labor market. Still, the investment bank is aware of external risks, including geopolitical uncertainties, President Donald Trump's administration policies, and fluctuations in the Japanese Yen (JPY), the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/which-country-has-the-largest-forex-market">third largest global currency</a>.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Balanced Growth: Consumer Spending And Capital Expenditures&nbsp;</h3>
Private consumption remains at the forefront of Japan's economy. Despite rising prices, households adjusted, supported by the strong labor markets. Real wages grew for five consecutive quarters as price competition forced firms to offer incentives to retain top talent.
The spring wage negotiations indicate an average increase of 6.09%- the strongest gains in three decades.
Firms invest heavily in automation, digital transformation, and green technologies to offset labor shortages, thus driving capital expenditures. Japan's aging workforce has made this trend essential, while government incentives for AI and semiconductor development further encourage business investment. Still, geopolitical risks surrounding the U.S. and stricter policies on China could impact Japan's supply chains, prompting the private sector to exercise caution.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">BOJ To Hike Further Till 2027&nbsp;</h3>
Daiwa expects the BOJ, which raised interest rates to 0.5% in January 2025, to continue gradually <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/what-makes-the-forex-market-move">tightening monetary policy</a>. It sees the BOJ raising rates to 0.75% by July 2025, with additional hikes of 0.25 percentage points every six months, reaching 1.5% by early 2027.
The aforementioned wage growth and rising input costs will likely sustain inflationary pressures, prompting the BOJ to plan hikes. However, the central bank must be careful; otherwise, it risks overtightening, which could stifle growth.
JPY remains the focus for investors and policymakers. After a sharp decline in 2024 and a summer rally that caused a spectacular carry-trade blowup, it somewhat stabilized at around 150 per dollar. However, analysts warn that if the yen weakens beyond 170 per dollar, it could trigger inflationary pressures and force the BOJ to raise rates more aggressively than planned.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Diverging Monetary Policy Creates Opportunities&nbsp;</h3>
BOJ&#8217;s policy diverges from that of other large central banks like the Federal Reserve or the European Central Bank, which are already lowering interest rates. If the trend persists, diverging approaches will create an opportunity to invest in JPY, an advantage in the unstable geopolitical environment, as Japan&#8217;s currency has traditionally been a safe haven, and somewhat correlated with the US dollar in that regard.
The Swiss National Bank already cut the interest rate from 1% to 0.5% in December, with Reuters reporting that the market expected the rate to go below 0%. If this scenario materializes, it is realistic to expect that the CHF/JPY pair might undo some of its 45% gain in the last five years.
The pair has been forming a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/descending-triangle-pattern">descending triangle pattern</a> on the weekly chart. As price moves toward the apex, this pattern will likely resolve before summer, potentially triggering a bigger move &#8211; 500 percentage-in-points (<a href="https://singaporeforexclub.com/what-is-a-pip-in-forex">pips</a>) or more.

Baker Hughes Company (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BKR#NASDAQ">BKR</a>) shares are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading slightly higher on Wednesday.</a>
The company said today that it has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bakerhughes.com/company/news/us-department-defense-grants-baker-hughes-awardable-status-development-geothermal" rel="noreferrer noopener">selected </a>by the U.S. Air Force and the Department of Defense&#8217;s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office to explore opportunities in geothermal energy development.
Baker Hughes has achieved &#8220;Awardable&#8221; status, enabling it to develop utility-scale geothermal power plants to supply U.S. military bases with reliable, cost-effective electricity, even during grid outages.
This initiative is part of the U.S. military&#8217;s effort to secure resilient energy sources and enhance national security.
&#8220;The ability of geothermal to provide reliable, secure baseload power makes it an ideal addition to America&#8217;s energy mix,&#8221; said Ajit Menon, vice president of Geothermal, Oilfield Services &amp; Equipment at Baker Hughes.&nbsp;

Mortgage rates have fallen to their lowest level since last October, spurring a significant increase in mortgage<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/03/44237879/rocket-redfin-deal-aims-to-create-end-to-end-real-estate-solution-where-does-that-leave-zillow"> applications last week.</a>
The Details: The average rate on a 30-year loan fell to 6.67% and the Mortgage Bankers Association <a href="https://www.mba.org/news-and-research/newsroom/news/2025/03/12/mortgage-applications-increase-in-latest-mba-weekly-survey">reported </a>mortgage loan application volume increased 11.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis for the week.&nbsp;
&#8220;Mortgage rates declined for the sixth consecutive week, with the 30-year fixed rate dropping to 6.67 percent, the lowest level since October 2024. As a result, applications increased over the week and were up 31% from a year ago," said Joel Kan, MBA's Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist.&nbsp;

Kan also highlighted application activity was up across all loan categories with government purchase applications rising 11% as the FHA rate fell to 6.34 percent.
The Refinance Index surged 16% from the previous week and refinance applications were up 90% from the same week last year. The total number of refinance applications remains low, leading to a large percentage increase. 
However, homebuyers who purchased within the last two years may be able to refinance at a slightly lower rate now, which contributed to the refinance share of mortgage activity increasing to 45.6% of total applications, up from 43.8% the previous week.
Mortgage rates are closely tied to the yields on long-term government bonds, specifically the 10-year Treasury bond. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note rose above 4.33% on Wednesday after softer-than-expected inflation data<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44275575/wall-street-rockets-as-february-inflation-cools-more-than-expected"> eased concerns</a> about the strength of the U.S. economy.&nbsp;
The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NYSE">TLT</a>) fell 0.34% to $90.09 at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday.&nbsp;

Global mobility technology provider&nbsp;ECARX Holdings Inc.&nbsp;(ECX.US) reached a major milestone in the fourth quarter, as one of its profit metrics turned positive for the first time in its drive to sustainability. It disclosed that achievement on Monday in its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/03/11/3040426/0/en/ECARX-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2024-Unaudited-Financial-Results.html">latest quarterly report</a>, as it logged another big milestone by signing a major new partnership with European auto giant Volkswagen.
ECARX counts Geely, one of China's largest private automakers, as the biggest buyer of its digital cockpits. It hopes the new Volkswagen partnership will mark the acceleration of its drive toward a more diversified customer base for its digital cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that are its two main product lines.
At the same time, the company is facing a global car market where competition is intensifying as overall growth remains sluggish – a reality that showed up in slowing revenue growth in ECARX's latest quarterly report, as well as margins that remain under pressure.
Analysts expect the Volkswagen partnership to jumpstart that growth as early as 2027, and for a more mature partnership with China's FAW to provide a lift starting this year. Meantime, a recently announced campaign by Geely to streamline its supply chains could also play to ECARX's advantage as it emerges as a preferred supplier to a large family of car brands that includes not only Geely, but also names like Zeekr, Volvo and Lotus.
The prize could be huge for companies that make it to the finish line and can tap into a huge global market for the digital technologies that will power the smartcars of the future. But a shakeout in the crowded field of technology suppliers is also inevitable. ECARX's chances should be higher than many due to its Geely ties. And to make sure it has the cash it needs, the company may soon look to capital markets to fatten up its coffers.
Shen Ziyu, who co-founded ECARX with Geely founder Li Shufu in 2017 and currently serves as its CEO, described the current global automative market as "challenging" due to its slow pace of growth with many companies fighting for market share.
"As growth slows and remains uneven globally, it becomes ever more important for companies to stand out from competition and define themselves," he said on ECARX's earnings call. "We are capitalizing on this growing demand and helping automakers distinguish themselves with our innovative product portfolio, diverse customer base, and strategic global partnerships."
ECARX's biggest news came four days before its latest quarterly report, when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/03/06/3037997/0/en/ECARX-to-provide-Volkswagen-Brazil-and-Skoda-with-digital-cockpit-solutions.html">it disclosed</a>&nbsp;a new agreement to provide its digital hardware and software to Volkswagen for use in its Volkswagen and Skoda brands. It said the partnership will eventually produce a "significant number of cars" using ECARX technology, with initial launches planned in Brazil and India.
Such partnerships are important for companies like ECARX, though they typically require at least two to three years to translate into significant sales. Carmakers typically design new models that incorporate the supplier's technology and then go through various development phases before mass production can begin.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">10 billion yuan value</h4>
UBS said it expects ECARX to start generating revenue from "a well-known European OEM" in 2026, with a lifetime value of the partnership expected at 10 billion yuan ($1.38 billion). That reference appears to refer to the Volkswagen partnership, though UBS wasn't that explicit in its research note that initiated its coverage on the company.
UBS said it expects business from the new European OEM and FAW partnerships to charge up ECARX's revenue growth in the years ahead. It added that ECARX looks "well positioned to benefit" from Geely's effort to consolidate its supply chain announced in last year's third quarter, with the potential to ultimately supply 68% of Geely's digital cockpits in 2026, up from 50% last year.
UBS began covering ECARX in February and gave it a "buy" rating. The investment community is like-minded in that regard, with all six analysts polled by Yahoo Finance rating the company a similar "buy." But even after a 33% rally for its stock this year, ECARX shares still trade at a low price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of just 1.25, well behind the 3.58 for domestic peer&nbsp;iMotion&nbsp;(1274.HK) and 7.63 for global leader&nbsp;Mobileye&nbsp;(MBLY.US).
ECARX shares fell 6.7% after the release of its latest report amid recent broader market weakness that has seen the S&amp;P 500 drop nearly 4% over the last week.
That company's latest report showed its revenue rose 4% in the fourth quarter to 1.94 billion yuan, as 16% growth for its core digital cockpits was offset by declines in its smaller software licensing and service revenue. The company shipped 718,000 units during the quarter, more than a third of its record 2 million units shipped for the year. It said its technology is now used in 8.1 million vehicles on the road worldwide, and it sells to 18 automakers across 28 brands.
ECARX is also developing a new product called Skyland Pro, which is a next-generation ADAS platform already adopted by a couple of Geely cars in a step that CFO Peter Cirino described as "crucial to driving the long-term sustainable development of our business and the global automotive industry."
The company exercised cost controls that helped reduce its overall operating expenses by 32% during the fourth quarter year-on-year. Still, the intense competition drove down its gross margin to 21.2% from 23% a year earlier, as it blamed a "penetration pricing strategy adopted to drive automotive computing platform revenue growth."
Its bottom line was still in the red, though its net loss of 39.5 million yuan marked a sharp improvement from the 326.7 million yuan loss a year earlier. And as we previously noted, CEO Shen said ECARX hit breakeven on an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBTIDA) basis in the fourth quarter, leading him to predict the company should be profitable on the same basis for all of 2025.
ECARX needs to be mindful of its losses, as its cash fell to 367 million yuan at the end of last year from 588 million yuan a year earlier. But it noted on its call that the company has made the necessary filings to raise more money when the time is right, suggesting it could do some fundraising soon to take advantage of recent positive investor sentiment. The filing it referenced showed the company could raise up to $300 million by issuing more of its shares.
