The Fund normally invests at least 80% of its total assets in securities that comprise the Funds benchmark index. The Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index includes companies primarily engaged in a variety of activities that are related to the producing, refining and recycling of rare earth and strategic metals and minerals. Such companies may include small- and medium- capitalization companies and foreign and emerging market issuers. To be initially eligible for the Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index, companies must generate at least 50% of their revenues from rare earth/strategic metals or have mining projects with the potential to generate at least 50% of their revenues from rare earth/strategic metals when developed. Rare earth/strategic metals are industrial metals that are typically mined as by-products or secondary metals in operations focused on precious metals and base metals. Compared to base metals, they have more specialized uses and are often more difficult to extract. Currently, approximately 44 elements in the periodic table are considered rare earth/strategic metals. Rare earth metals (or rare earth elements), a subset of strategic metals, are a collection of chemical elements that are crucial to many of the worlds most advanced technologies, such as cellular phones, high performance batteries, flat screen televisions, green energy technology, and are expected to be critical to the future of hybrid and electric cars, high-tech military applications and superconductors and fiber-optic communication systems. The Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index may include A-shares issued by companies trading via the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect program and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect program (together, Stock Connect). As of December 31, 2023, the Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index included 27 securities of companies with a market capitalization range of between approximately $349 million and $17 billion and a weighted average market capitalization of $5.2 billion. These amounts are subject to change. The Funds 80% investment policy is non-fundamental and may be changed without shareholder approval upon 60 days prior written notice to shareholders.

MP Materials Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MP#NYSE">MP</a>) shares are trading higher premarket on Friday after the company reported fourth-quarter revenue growth of 48% year-over-year (Y/Y) to $61.0 million, beating the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/b43865668/mp-materials-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2024-results" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $51.0 million</a>.
Revenue growth&nbsp;was driven&nbsp;by increased sales in the Materials Segment,&nbsp;on&nbsp;higher NdPr oxide and metal sales due to the transition to midstream production of separated products.
The company achieved a production of 11,478 metric tons of rare earth oxides (REO) in concentrate during the quarter, despite a planned maintenance shutdown, and sold 7,803 metric tons.
MP Materials produced 413 metric tons of NdPr oxide and sold 468 metric tons in the quarter.
Adjusted EBITDA loss stood at $10.7 million versus a profit of $1.3 million owing to higher production costs in the Materials Segment on the initial ramp-up of separated product manufacturing.
Adjusted EPS loss of $0.12&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the consensus estimate loss of $0.13</a>.
Adjusted EPS were impacted by decline in Adjusted EBITDA, increased interest expenses from the 2030 convertible notes issued in first quarter of 2024, lower interest income, and higher depreciation costs. As of December 31, cash and equivalents stood at $850.87 million.
MP Materials Chairman and CEO James Litinsky said, &#8220;Notably, we achieved record upstream and midstream production at Mountain Pass and, in the fourth quarter, commenced commercial production of NdPr metal and trial production of automotive-grade magnets at Independence.&#8221;

MP Materials Q4 Earnings: 48% Revenue Surge, Higher Production, Soft Pricing Environment And More

The energy transition is reshaping the global mining industry, with demand for critical minerals expected to surge over the coming decades. A shift toward renewable energy and electrification drives demand for commodities like copper, nickel, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/23/07/33233340/rare-earth-elements-explained" rel="noreferrer noopener">rare earth elements</a>.
According to BDO's Annual Mining Report, the demand for key energy transition minerals will <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bdo.co.uk/en-gb/insights/industries/natural-resources-and-energy/annual-mining-report" rel="noreferrer noopener">nearly triple by 2030</a> and quadruple by 2040.
Copper remains a cornerstone of the transition, as it is the only critical mineral vital for all clean energy technologies, such as solar, wind, electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, and power grids.
While copper prices hit a record high in mid-2024, they later softened due to weak demand from China's property market. In 2025, forecasts suggest continued price constraints due to high inventories despite the long-term positive outlook.
Merger and acquisition activity has surged – with mining giant BHP <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/05/39068033/time-runs-out-for-bhp-deal-49-billion-acquisition-of-anglo-american-proves-too-complex-to-solve" rel="noreferrer noopener">unsuccessfully bidding</a> for Anglo American and launching a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/40031488/bhp-to-unlock-south-american-copper-riches-partners-with-lundin-for-filo-acquisition" rel="noreferrer noopener">joint venture</a> with Lundin. Meanwhile, sector leader Freeport-McMoRan is opting for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/09/41098074/freeport-mcmoran-sticks-with-organic-growth-takes-advantage-of-geodiversity" rel="noreferrer noopener">capex-driven internal expansion</a>.
Nickel, a metal essential for battery technologies, has faced a turbulent period. In 2024, an oversupply from Indonesia and China led to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/07/39749321/bhp-halts-nickel-mine-were-not-able-to-overcome-economic-challenges-driven-by-oversupply" rel="noreferrer noopener">mine closures</a>, including those operated by Glencore and BHP. However, a rebound is expected in 2025 as supply surpluses narrow and demand for EV batteries remains strong.
Despite the forecasted price stabilization, industry players remain cautious, with some automakers shifting towards alternative battery chemistries that reduce dependence on nickel.
Zinc, another key transition metal used in wind and solar infrastructure, experienced a sluggish first half of 2024 due to subdued industrial activity but rebounded later in the year thanks to Chinese stimulus measures.
In 2025, BDO expects the demand to strengthen as renewable energy projects ramp up. Still, supply constraints and logistical challenges may continue to drive price fluctuations.
The rare earth element market is also in focus as countries look to diversify their supply chains since the U.S., China, and Myanmar account for 92% of global production.
President Donald Trump's recent remark shows the importance of this group of metals, which is vital for producing magnets.
"We're looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they're going to secure what we're giving them with their rare earths and other things," he said,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/trump-says-he-wants-ukraine-supply-us-with-rare-earths-2025-02-03/" rel="noreferrer noopener"> per</a> Reuters.
Looking forward, despite opportunities created by the energy transition, BDO notes a pressing demographic challenge.
Per McKinsey's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/metals-and-mining/our-insights/has-mining-lost-its-luster-why-talent-is-moving-elsewhere-and-how-to-bring-them-back" rel="noreferrer noopener">survey</a> of Canadian mining companies, 70% of people between 15 and 30 years old would not consider working in mining. Meanwhile, between 2016 and 2022, the number of mining engineering graduates in the U.S. fell by 41%.
While the industry tries to reverse the trend by integrating advanced technologies and enhancing sustainability efforts to create a more attractive work environment – closing the skills gap remains a key. To drive the next phase of mining evolution, the future workforce will need expertise in automation, AI, and environmental management.

Critical Metal Demand To Triple By 2030, But Demographics Pose Risks

Sigma Lithium Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SGML#NASDAQ">SGML</a>) reported a third-quarter revenue of $20.9 million, missing the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/11/n42003367/sigma-lithium-announces-3q24-results-production-beats-guidance-maintained-low-costs-at-target-gene" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $72.5 million</a>.
Sales revenue for shipments stood at $44.2 million in the quarter and Concentrate sold came in at 57,483 tonnes vs. 52,572 tonnes in the second quarter of 2024.
Sigma Lithium delivered strong operational results at its Greentech industrial plant in the third quarter, producing 60,237 tonnes of Quintuple Zero Lithium Concentrate, an increase of 22% quarter over quarter and exceeding the 60,000 tonnes guidance.
This performance included multiple daily production records and sustained operations above 860 tonnes per day.
In the third-quarter, Sigma Lithium achieved one of the industry&#8217;s lowest cash unit operating costs, with CIF China averaging $513/ tonnes, slightly down from $515/ tonnes in the second quarter of 2024.
At the Grota do Cirilo operations, cash unit operating costs for lithium concentrate averaged $395/t, including a temporary $25/t expense for mobile crushers.
The company reported cash adjusted EBITDA&nbsp;loss of $10.6 million and EBITDA loss of $12.8 million in the quarter. Loss per share of $0.23&nbsp;missed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">the EPS consensus of $0.07</a>.
Sigma Lithium ended the third quarter with&nbsp;cash and cash equivalents of $65.6 million, and operating cash flow stood at&nbsp;$34 million&nbsp;in the third quarter.
Outlook: The company anticipates fourth-quarter production <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">to reach at least 60,000 tonnes</a>.
Ana Cabral, Co-Chairperson and CEO said,&nbsp;&#8220;This quarter we achieved our production and low industry cost targets, generating robust free cash flow and demonstrating our operational resilience to lithium cycles.&#8221;
&#8221;We also benefited from our shifted commercial strategy to navigate industry seasonality, enabling us to secure higher average realized prices compared to benchmarks.&#8221;

Sigma Lithium Misses Q3 Revenue and EPS Targets Despite Production Gains

In a recent study, researchers have suggested that Arkansas could potentially hold a significant amount of lithium, a crucial component for electric car batteries and other high-tech products.
What Happened: The researchers, in a study published in the journal Science Advances, have estimated that there could be between 5.1 to 19 million tons of lithium in the Smackover Formation brines in southern Arkansas, <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/4945872-arkansas-19-million-tons-lithium-battery-power/">reported</a> The Hill. This amount could potentially make up 35 to 136% of the current U.S. lithium resource estimate.
The researchers used a machine-learning model trained on published and newly collected brine lithium concentration data to create a map of predicted lithium concentrations in Smackover Formation brines across southern Arkansas.

Arkansas May Be Sitting On 19M Tons Of Lithium Amid Rising Demand For EV Batteries: How To Invest In What Elon Musk Calls 'The New Oil'

Goldman Sachs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>) reinforced its bullish outlook on gold, citing increased central bank demand and expectations of a U.S. Federal Reserve <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/federal-reserve" rel="noreferrer noopener">interest rate cut</a> tomorrow.
"While we see some tactical downside to gold prices under our economists' base case of a 25bp Fed cut on Wednesday, we reiterate our long gold trading recommendation and our price target of $2,700/oz by early 2025," the investment bank said in a note.
With the price of gold making new all-time highs, reaching 2589.60 on the spot market, the two-quarter upside price target of 5% doesn't seem much. At the moment, the market is pricing a 65% chance of a 50-basis-point cut tomorrow, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&amp;q=cme+fed+watchtool" rel="noreferrer noopener">per</a> the CME FedWatch tool.

Gold is traditionally seen as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty. In contrast to its positive gold outlook, the bank recently downgraded its projection for iron ore prices. The bank slashed its fourth-quarter 2024 forecast by $15 per metric ton, lowering it to $85 due to concerns of oversupply despite stabilizing demand from China.
Despite China's attempts at economic stimulus and rising steel demand, the broader economic slowdown and the real estate crisis have dampened demand for iron ore. Its futures briefly dipped below $90, reaching the lowest point in almost two years.
Goldman noted that while there might be short-term support due to restocking ahead of the holiday week in October, but the continued buildup of iron ore inventories is likely to drive prices further down.
Supply-demand imbalances have been a key issue for the market, particularly with major players like Brazil's Vale and Australia's BHP maintaining production levels.
Kallanish Consulting analyst Ian Roper explained the current price dynamics <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/business/international/2024/09/11/iron-ore-tests-floor-as-plunge-to-90-a-ton-puts-mines-at-risk/" rel="noreferrer noopener">for</a> Bloomberg.
"We need to eliminate about 100 million tons to balance this market, and to do that, we need prices to settle in the $80s," he noted.

Korean and Chinese magnet firms, including an Apple supplier, are set to open factories in Vietnam, according to documents and people familiar with the plans, amid a push to diversify supply chains away from China and defend against Sino-U.S. tension.

South Korea&#39;s Star Group Industrial (SGI) and China&#39;s Baotou INST Magnetic would join companies in sectors as varied as electronics and automobiles in shifting assembly lines against a backdrop of increasing trade restrictions, with clients even requesting the move, the people said.

China is dominant in magnets and the rare earth metals they are made from. The magnets are central to the manufacturing of such products as electric vehicles, wind turbines, weapons and smartphones, making the sector strategically important. Even so, there has been only limited effort to challenge China&#39;s lead.
&nbsp;
Neighbouring Vietnam, however, has untapped rare earth deposits second only to China&#39;s, as well as a fledgling processing industry, giving the country the potential to be a much bigger competitor, industry insiders said.
Still, Vietnam produces just 1% of the world&#39;s magnets, showed Adamas Intelligence data cited in a U.S. Department of Energy report, compared with China&#39;s 92%.

Moreover, some Chinese factories can produce 10 times as many magnets as SGI&#39;s project, and China dominates the mining and processing of the ores.

Nevertheless, Vietnam&#39;s rise is significant.

Moreover, U.S. officials have signalled growing interest in Vietnam&#39;s rare earths potential amid discussion to upgrade bilateral ties this year, and South Korea signed a deal with Vietnam in June to boost its supply chain of critical minerals.
&nbsp;
Magnet makers are also drawn to Vietnam by low labour costs and market access afforded by multiple free-trade deals. They also want to move closer to Vietnam-based clients, such as automakers and electronics firms, which are increasingly wary of over-reliance on Chinese supplies as relations worsen between Washington and Beijing, industry insiders said.

Vietnam is the only country beyond China with all stages of the magnet supply chain, from mining rare earths to downstream production, said a Vietnam-based industry consultant, who was not authorised to speak to media so declined to be identified.
&nbsp;
The government plans a vast expansion of rare earths production by the end of the decade and is boosting refining capacity, which the U.S. energy department estimated accounts for 3% of the global share.
However, &quot;anyone who is trying to build from scratch a mine-to-magnet supply chain is going to face a lot of challenges,&quot; said David Merriman of Project Blue.

Kishida is visiting Saudi Arabia as part of a tour of the Middle East.&nbsp;&nbsp;
As part of the agreement, a memorandum of cooperation will be signed soon by&nbsp;Japan&#39;s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the state-backed&nbsp;Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and Saudi Arabia&#39;s&nbsp;Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources.&nbsp;
Under the deal, Japan and Saudi Arabia&nbsp;will explore resource development projects&nbsp;in third countries for joint investment.&nbsp;They hope to secure rights to key minerals, such as rare-earth metals&nbsp;used in electric vehicles. Demand for EVs is only growing amid a&nbsp;global push toward decarbonization.
Saudi Arabia is searching for new rare-earth deposits at home as part of its national strategy. JOGMEC will contribute&nbsp;technical expertise to assist Riyadh in conducting preliminary surveys.
Japan will also help accelerate the&nbsp;development of resources already being mined in Saudi Arabia, such as copper, iron and zinc.
A handful of countries, including&nbsp;China, currently&nbsp;produce&nbsp;much of the world&#39;s rare earths, as well as elements used in&nbsp;EV batteries&nbsp;like lithium and cobalt. Japan and Saudi Arabia both aim to diversify supply chains for such metals to avoid depending too heavily on any specific supplier.
Japan in particular relies on China for nearly 80% of its&nbsp;lithium hydroxide supply, and over 60% of its cobalt processing. It was forced to seek alternative suppliers when China restricted rare-earth exports to Japan following a&nbsp;2010 collision of Chinese and Japanese vessels near the Senkaku Islands, a Japanese-administered chain claimed by China as the Diaoyu.
Kishida will also be stopping at the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to meet&nbsp;with their leaders and&nbsp;affirm cooperation in energy and other fields.

Commodities May Be The Next Big Thing; Here Are 3 ETFs To Get Started

President Donald Trump signed a new executive order to emphasize the U.S. efforts on rare earth mining.
What Happened:&nbsp;On Wednesday, Trump <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-09-30/trump-moves-to-expand-rare-earths-mining-citing-china-threat">signed</a> an executive order to expand the production of rare earth minerals. Rare earth minerals are vital to many manufacturing sectors, including electric vehicles, missile guided systems and wind turbines.
The executive order declares a national emergency in the mining industry. The White House is ordering the Department of Defense to boost the production of rare-earth magnets.
Why It&rsquo;s Important: The U.S. is currently dependent on China for 80% of its imported rare-earth compounds and metals. There is a fear that China could restrict exports of this segment due to ongoing tariff conflicts.
Demand for rare earth minerals is expected to rise substantially. <a href="https://www.miningweekly.com/article/astronomical-rare-earth-demand-growth-forecast-2020-09-29">Mining Weekly</a> shows the sector going from $2.98 billion to $5.65 billion by the year 2030.
Metal Stocks Move: Northern Dynasty Minerals (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nak#NYSE">NAK</a>), which is working on getting a mine approved in Alaska, saw shares climb 7% to $1.04.
Piedmont Lithium (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/pll#NASDAQ">PLL</a>), who saw shares boost from a Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) lithium deal, were up 8% to $25.32.
Lithium Americas Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lac#NYSE">LAC</a>) shares were up 10% to $12.50.
Westwater Resources (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/wwr#NASDAQ">WWR</a>) shares climbed 18% to $2.96.
Lynas Corporation (Pink: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lyscf#Pink">LYSCF</a>), who is planning a rare-earth mineral processing site in the U.S., saw shares trade 5%% higher to $1.77.
The VanEck Vectors Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/remx#NYSE">REMX</a>) traded higher 1% to $38.15. The ETF contains many Chinese miners in its top ten holdings.
The SPAC Miner Opportunity: Fortress Value Acquisition Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fvac#NYSE">FVAC</a>) is a SPAC <a href="https://d1qmdf3vop2l07.cloudfront.net/adroit-marten.cloudvent.net/hash-store/03ee706c0b5d714ae974dfddc829f2b7.pdf">set to merge</a> with rare earth miner MP Materials.
MP Materials is the only rare earths producer in North America and has an <a href="https://d1qmdf3vop2l07.cloudfront.net/adroit-marten.cloudvent.net/hash-store/31be44cfbec9a97d15997bb1dcff5573.pdf">existing deal</a> in place with the Department of Defense.
In April, the company signed a contract to accelerate the U.S. production of rare earth minerals. Phase 1 was to help reduce the U.S. supply chain for rare earth minerals. Upon completion of Phase 1, the DoD may award further contracts.
The merger values MP Materials at an enterprise value of $1.5 billion. The company estimates 2020 revenue to be $100 million.
MP Materials is expecting a positive adjusted EBITDA of $30 million for the 2020 fiscal year. The company expects adjusted EBITDA to hit $250 million in 2023 as production is ramped up.
SPAC King Chamath Palihapitiya<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/20/09/17492732/social-capital-ceo-chamath-palihapitiya-plans-spacs-from-ipoa-to-ipoz"> is part </a>of the $200 million PIPE to finance the MP Materials and Fortress Value deal.

In 2018, China produced about 78 percent of the world&rsquo;s rare earth elements. China also owns about 40 percent of all rare earth element resources.
&ldquo;What can I tell you is that if anyone were to use products that are made with the rare earths that we export to curb the development of China, then the people of [south Jiangxi province where rare earths are mined] as well as all the rest of the Chinese people would be unhappy,&rdquo; the official said.
<h3>Experts React</h3>
Hu Xijin, editor of China&rsquo;s Global Times, also mentioned rare earth elements in a<a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-usa-rareearth/china-considers-us-rare-earth-export-curbs-global-times-editor-idUSKCN1SY1GK"> Tuesday tweet</a>.
&ldquo;Based on what I know, China is seriously considering restricting rare earth exports to the U.S. China may also take other countermeasures in the future,&rdquo; Xijin wrote.
Despite the threats, some analysts are saying it may actually be difficult for China to easily cut of its rare earth element trade with the U.S. Almost all of the rare earth elements China exports to the U.S. are embedded within technology, rather than raw elements. The amount is also relatively small, at around 4,000 tons worth about $175 million.
Still, the last time China decided to limit rare earth element exports, the price of the rare earth miners index (MVREMXTR Index) was roughly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/19/05/13785412/rare-earths-weaponization-its-a-thing-and-its-lifting-this-etf">nine times</a> what it is today.
