In a Tuesday note, Standard Chartered Head of Digital Assets Research Geoffrey Kendrick said that Bitcoin traded like a tech stock except in times of risk to the legacy financial system. In these instances, Kendrick asserted that the asset acted as a hedge, citing its price action during the banking crisis that led to the collapse of several banks in Q1 2023.

Kendrick opined that in the case of Bitcoin&#8217;s most recent rally, investors were reacting to risks to the financial system associated with the government amid the growing threat to the Federal Reserve&#8217;s independence under the Trump administration.
In recent weeks, Trump has openly tried to twist the arm of Fed Chair Jerome Powell to cut interest rates using personal attacks on social media.&nbsp;
&#8220;There can be a SLOWING of the economy unless Mr. Too Late, a major loser, lowers interest rates, NOW,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114376239725335883">wrote</a>, referring to Powell in a Monday Truth Social post, asserting that &#8220;there is virtually No Inflation.&#8221;

Kendrick said that the attacks are triggering uncertainty in the Treasury market, with which he highlighted that Bitcoin is strongly correlated. Specifically, the 10-year Treasury term premium has surged to 12-year highs, with Bitcoin seemingly replicating its run.
&#8220;As such, so long as Fed independence issues continue to play out I think Bitcoin will keep heading higher. This could be what is needed for the next all-time high,&#8221; Kendrick wrote, reiterating his $200,000 year-end price target for Bitcoin and $500,000 target for 2028.
Indeed, Bitcoin continues to run higher at the latest look, surging 5% in the past 24 hours to trade near $91,000 for the first time since early March. Several analysts have marked the $90,000 to $92,000 price range as the level to beat for the leading digital asset to confirm the start of another impulsive phase.

But instead of making concessions or apologizing, the Base team, particularly its lead developer Jesse Pollak, is doubling down.&nbsp;

Pollak does not appear to be afraid of offending traders in his quest to defend Base&#8217;s controversial token experiment. As part of an X post storm he has whipped up to defend the Base team&#8217;s actions, the blockchain developer <a href="https://x.com/jessepollak/status/1914338202728665332?t=iaGRzxjQ2B8iYPl1uEYp7g&amp;s=19">said</a> on Monday that creators, not traders, are the priority of the blockchain.

Unsurprisingly, the statement has sparked pushback. Reacting to Pollak&#8217;s statements, Alon Cohen, co-founder of popular Solana memecoin launchpad Pump.fun, <a href="https://x.com/a1lon9/status/1914421121350570333?t=rJiL3DWUeADfGudW0dlPew&amp;s=19">argued</a> that traders trumped creators and developers in crypto.
&#8220;If traders don&#8217;t see value, creators &amp; devs don&#8217;t eat and go elsewhere. so if you&#8217;re tokenizing anything, traders come first,&#8221; he wrote&nbsp;
But Pollak doubled down.
&#8220;I love traders, but our north star is helping creators and developers build their dreams &#8211; everything else is downstream of that,&#8221; he <a href="https://x.com/jessepollak/status/1914425838378045737?t=cunIFCj_qfuvGqmN6PN7TQ&amp;s=19">responded</a>.

Last week, Base&#8217;s official X account <a href="https://x.com/base/status/1912584945127813533?t=yI8bVEk4SdbwJNV81vB3iQ&amp;s=19">shared</a> an image with the caption &#8220;Base is for everyone,&#8221; following up a minute later with <a href="https://x.com/base/status/1912585069811863765?t=-XdA1q3YPLWPNsMGZFoucg&amp;s=19">another post</a> stating &#8220;coined it,&#8221; linking to Zora, an on-chain social network backed by Coinbase that tokenizes content, where users could purchase a token based on the post.
Unsurprisingly, many did. The token&#8217;s value quickly soared to $17 million. But just as speculators started to ride the high, the token quickly crashed 96% to around $720,000, leaving many holding the bag.&nbsp;
The crash came as early buyers <a href="https://basescan.org/address/0x099246ca997acf47ada682c9c60f9ed0954ad960">dumped</a> en masse as Base <a href="https://zora.co/coin/base:0x6977d841d7b013c9f45ea20c2d79d5380460a0d4?referrer=0x9652721d02b9db43f4311102820158abb4ecc95b">continued to create</a> new tokens, splitting attention and triggering confusion.

In the aftermath of the chaos, the Base team <a href="https://x.com/base/status/1912644784461869305?t=kF0RXbFUSjH6COoBwjR9kg&amp;s=19">said</a> that the token launches were part of an experiment to encourage people to put their content on-chain.&nbsp;
&#8220;Someone has to normalize putting all of our content onchain. and i&#8217;m not afraid for it to be us. why? because in the wake of the chaos, we&#8217;ll normalize the behavior and create a better future for creators,&#8221; Pollak <a href="https://x.com/jessepollak/status/1912608624872231131?t=3XjtP____-vR7R8DQAAwaQ&amp;s=19">said</a>, linking to a series of posts explaining how the tokens launched by Base differed from memecoins.
Pollak defined the so-called contentcoins as representing a single content with singular value and no expectations. But these arguments about intent did not stop many from bashing Base&#8217;s execution.&nbsp;
For example, Now Media founder Matthew Medved <a href="https://nftnow.com/features/base-content-coins-onchain-media-op-ed/">said</a> that Base&#8217;s approach hurt user trust.
&#8220;Base could&#8217;ve more obviously framed this as an open experiment. Instead, the post dropped without the proper context, and the ‘content coin' explanation came only after the crash. The stunt succeeded in capturing attention, but it came at the cost of trust. What could&#8217;ve been a meaningful test of media infrastructure ended up looking like just another rug pull,&#8221; he wrote.

The maple syrup industry has enjoyed explosive growth over the past three decades. In the U.S. alone, production has increased from a total value of $34 million in 2000 to $171 million in 2022, according to<a href="https://countryfolks.com/the-maple-industry-how-will-it-change-going-forward/"> Country Folks</a>. However, climate change has been a big concern. &#8220;Most maple producers are concerned about their yield, concerned about their tree health,&#8221; Mark Cannella, associate professor and farm business management specialist at the University of Vermont, told the website.&nbsp;
The prospect of tariffs has added another layer of worry to manufacturers. &#8220;If something is going up 25% or 5%, whatever and you sell it at the same price you&#8217;ve been selling it at for the last five years, that is going to dent our pockets,&#8221; Kevin Keyes, co-owner of Dry Brook Sugar House in Salem, New York told<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/12/business/trump-tariffs-american-maple-syrup-farmers/index.html"> CNN</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Smaller Farms Will Be Hardest Hit</h2>
Mapleland Farms, also in Salem, is one of the larger operations in the area, running up to 20,000 tap lines during sap collecting season, reports CNN. Equipment upgrades are an ongoing expense. While they benefit from economies of scale, co-owner David Campbell feels that smaller farms will feel the tariffs the hardest. New businesses will struggle to get off the ground, while established businesses will have to raise prices.
&#8220;It&#8217;s going to make it harder for production to grow with the cost of equipment and expansion going up unless there is a bigger increase in the price of a finished product. The consumer is going to get that,&#8221; Campbell told CNN.
