JPMorgan analyst Reginald L. Smith breaks down the latest trends in the sector, upgrading IREN Ltd (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IREN#NASDAQ">IREN</a>) to Overweight while moving Cipher Mining Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CIFR#NASDAQ">CIFR</a>) to Neutral.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Record Quarter, But Who Benefited Most?</h2>
The fourth quarter saw four of the five major publicly traded bitcoin miners &#8211; Cipher, CleanSpark Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLSK#NASDAQ">CLSK</a>), IREN, MARA Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MARA#NASDAQ">MARA</a>) and Riot Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIOT#NASDAQ">RIOT</a>) &#8211; report record revenues and profits, largely thanks to Bitcoin's price surge. 
MARA led the pack in total coins mined (2,514 BTC), but IREN stole the show with a 65% increase in production quarter-over-quarter, bringing in 1,347 BTC.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mining Costs: The Great Divide</h2>
Efficiency is key in Bitcoin mining, and IREN came out on top, producing BTC at the lowest all-in cash cost of ~$36,100 per coin. Riot, on the other hand, posted the highest cost at ~$72,400 per BTC—a steep price even with BTC averaging ~$83,300 in the fourth quarter.
Smith notes that MARA had the lowest cash SG&amp;A costs at $9,600 per coin, making it a lean operator despite its relatively high power costs ($52,400 per BTC).
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hashrate Growth Takes A Breather</h2>
After an aggressive 180% increase in hashrate in 2024 &#8211; outpacing even network growth—the five miners are slowing down in 2025. CleanSpark and MARA are shifting toward more disciplined capital management, while IREN, Cipher, and Riot are evaluating hashrate expansion versus high-performance computing (HPC) opportunities. 
Riot and IREN have already trimmed their hashrate targets to free up capacity for HPC projects, with Cipher also considering reallocating resources.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">HPC: The Next Big Pivot?</h2>
Miners aren't just chasing bitcoin anymore. Smith sees HPC data centers as a key growth driver, with Cipher best positioned to strike a deal in the near term. IREN is constructing a 75 MW multi-tenant, liquid-cooled HPC data center, expected to go live in 2H25, though financing and tenant details remain unclear. 
Riot and IREN continue active talks with hyperscalers, but deals are taking longer to materialize.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stock Ratings Shake-Up</h2>
Smith is upgrading IREN to Overweight with a $12 price target, citing its low-cost structure and strong production growth. 
CleanSpark, also rated Overweight, gets a revised $12 price target (down from $17) due to deteriorating mining economics. 
Meanwhile, Cipher moves to Neutral, as its 2025 hashrate target lags behind competitors, and capital raises appear likely. 
MARA and Riot remain Neutral and Overweight, respectively, with price targets of $18 and $13.
With miners slowing expansion, pivoting toward HPC, and managing capital more cautiously, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of strategic recalibration. Bitcoin's price will still dictate the sector's fate, but as Smith highlights, those with the lowest costs and diversified revenue streams will have the edge.

Bitcoin Miners Ride The BTC Boom, But Costs Tell A Different Story: JPMorgan Analyst

Blade Air Mobility Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLDE#NASDAQ">BLDE</a>) shares are trading higher on Thursday after the company reported <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/03/g44298351/blade-air-mobility-announces-fourth-quarter-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">better-than-expected fourth-quarter 2024 results</a>.
The company reported fourth-quarter revenue growth of 14.5% year-over-year to $54.357 million, beating the consensus of $51.13 million.
Revenue growth was driven by growth in the Passenger and Medical segments. Excluding Canada, which exited in August 2024, revenue increased 22.1% year over year.
&#8220;While we continue to drive further cost efficiencies in our Passenger business, we remain laser focused on maximizing growth in Urban Air Mobility products such as our New York City airport transfer service, which saw high-teens year-over-year revenue expansion in Q4. Services like Blade Airport are key to accelerating and de-risking our planned shift from helicopters to eVTOL,&#8221; commented Rob Wiesenthal, Blade&#8217;s Chief Executive Officer.
Medical revenue rose 13.7% to $36.4 million, driven by higher trip volume and improved fleet efficiency. Short Distance revenue fell 14.7% to $9.1 million, but excluding Canada, it grew 17.7%. Jet and Other revenue surged 84.7% to $8.8 million on increased flight volumes.
Flight Profit rose 39.7% to $12.6 million, driven by growth in Medical and Passenger segments. Flight Margin improved to 23.2% from 19.0%, supported by efficiency gains and the Canada exit.
Quarterly net loss improved by $24.1 million year-over-year to $(9.8) million, mainly due to a $27.3 million reduction in operating losses, partially offset by non-operating items and taxes.
Adjusted EBITDA improved by $4.9 million year-over-year to $(0.4) million, driven by gains in Medical and Passenger segments, partially offset by higher corporate and software development expenses.
Operating Cash Flow rose by $7.6 million to $(1.8) million. Capex was $5 million, driven by a $3.2 million aircraft purchase. Free Cash Flow before aircraft acquisitions improved by $5.8 million to $(3.6) million.

Trump Warns Of 200% Tariff On French Champagne And EU Spirits In Retaliation To Europe's Tariff On US Whiskey

U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited transatlantic trade tensions, threatening to impose a 200% tariff on all European wine and alcoholic products unless the European Union drops its 50% <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">tariff on American whiskey.</a>
The move, announced Thursday on Truth Social, sent ripples through the beverage industry, sparking market reactions across major alcohol producers.
Trump criticized the EU as "one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World" and accused the bloc of exploiting the U.S. economy. 
He warned that unless the whiskey tariff was removed "immediately," the U.S. would retaliate with steep duties on "wines, champagnes, &amp; alcoholic products coming out of France and other E.U. represented countries."

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Much Is At Stake?</h3>
The U.S. is a critical market for European alcohol producers, importing $14.2 billion worth of beverages, spirits, and vinegar from the EU in 2024, according to International Trade Center data.
Of that, $5.65 billion came from wine-related products, making American consumers a crucial revenue stream for European winemakers. 
The U.S. market accounts for nearly a fifth of the EU's global wine exports, a dependence that makes Trump's tariff threat a significant economic concern for the industry.
French, Italian, and Spanish winemakers—who dominate EU exports to the U.S.—would face the brunt of the impact. French producers alone shipped more than $1.5 billion worth of wine to the U.S. last year.
On the other side, American whiskey producers like Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BF#NYSE">BF</a>) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BF#NYSE">BF</a>)—maker of Jack Daniel's—stand to gain if European tariffs are removed.
The trade dispute escalated after the European Commission announced plans on Wednesday to impose countermeasures on $28 billion worth of U.S. goods in response to blanket American tariffs on steel and aluminum. This retaliatory stance sets the stage for a renewed trade war, reminiscent of the tit-for-tat tariff battles of the Trump administration.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction: European Alcohol Stocks Already Feel The Heat</h3>
Trump's tariff warning sent shockwaves through alcohol stocks, particularly European producers. Shares of Davide Campari Milano (OTCPK: DVCMY) tumbled 3.6% during European trading, while Rémy Cointreau SA (OTCPK: REMYF), known for its premium cognacs, dropped nearly 4%. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (OTCPK: LVMHF), the owner of Moët &amp; Chandon and Hennessy, slipped 1.5%.
The U.S. alcohol sector, however, showed mixed reactions. Shares of Constellation Brands (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STZ#NYSE">STZ</a>), which owns Robert Mondavi wines and Corona beer, remained flat in premarket trading in New York. Meanwhile, Brown-Forman, a direct beneficiary if European tariffs on whiskey are lifted, rose 2%.

JPMorgan's latest energy sector update signals a shift in the landscape, driven by growing U.S. gas demand and a looming oil glut in 2025. 
Analyst Arun Jayaram and his team have crunched the numbers, revising forecasts and adjusting ratings accordingly. They&#8217;ve upgraded Range Resources Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RRC#NYSE">RRC</a>) and downgraded Vermilion Energy Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VET#NYSE">VET</a>) as gas stocks catch fire and oil stocks face headwinds.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Natural Gas: The New Favorite</h2>
JPMorgan is doubling down on natural gas, citing three major secular tailwinds:

<li>LNG Boom – The U.S. is ramping up LNG export capacity, set to increase by 11 Bcf/d by 2030, keeping demand strong.</li>
<li>Electrification Surge – AI-driven power consumption is skyrocketing, with U.S. gas turbine orders up 147% year-over-year.</li>
<li>Coal-to-Gas Shift – More utilities are pivoting to natural gas as a cleaner alternative to coal.</li>
</ol>
With these factors in play, JPMorgan sees long-term natural gas prices above $3.50 per MMBtu, potentially reaching $4.00+ in 2025-2026 to stimulate necessary supply growth. The firm's top picks in the sector remain Antero Resources Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AR#NYSE">AR</a>), EQT Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EQT#NYSE">EQT</a>) and Excelerate Energy Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EXE#NYSE">EXE</a>) &#8211; stocks that have yet to fully reflect the bullish gas price outlook.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Oil's Not-So-Slick Future</h2>
On the flip side, oil is in for a rougher ride. JPMorgan's commodity team, led by Natasha Kaneva, expects the market to shift from a balanced 2024 to a 1.3 million barrels per day (MMBo/d) surplus in 2025, as non-OPEC+ production surges from Brazil, Guyana and Norway.
Adding to the pressure, OPEC+ is set to bring more barrels back into the market starting in April, just as global demand growth slows. The team forecasts Brent crude prices ending 2025 below $70 per barrel, a bearish signal for oil stocks. As a result, JPMorgan is trimming its EBITDA estimates for oil companies by 2% in 2025 and 10% in 2026, with its oil coverage group seeing a 17% drop in net asset value-based price targets.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">RRC Up, VET Down</h2>
With this backdrop, JPMorgan has moved Range Resources to Neutral from Underweight, citing a more reasonable valuation and the company's shift toward production growth in 2026. 
Meanwhile, Vermilion Energy gets the downgrade to Underweight, reflecting concerns over valuation and lower-than-expected earnings projections.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Takeaway For Investors</h2>
The energy market is at an inflection point, with natural gas equities emerging as the better bet. 
With LNG demand booming, AI-driven power needs soaring and coal-to-gas switching in full swing, gas stocks could still have more room to run.
Meanwhile, oil investors should brace for volatility as the supply glut builds. JPMorgan's positioning? Bullish on gas, cautious on oil and keeping a close watch on the shifting energy tides.
