Freezing conditions could extend as far south as the Gulf Coast, further tightening the market.
Oil prices are also rising, with Brent crude up 0.5% at $76.25 per barrel and WTI crude for March delivery gaining 0.6% to $72.29. A Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian oil pumping station led to a reduction in flows through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium by up to 40%, equating to a potential loss of 380,000 barrels per day. Meanwhile, extreme cold weather in the U.S. has impacted production in North Dakota, with output estimated to be down by as much as 150,000 barrels per day according to Reuters.
Market sentiment is also being shaped by geopolitical factors. Uncertainty remains over Ukraine peace talks, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy postponing a trip to Saudi Arabia where discussions with U.S. and Russian officials were expected. A potential ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could reduce geopolitical risks, potentially stabilizing oil prices. Additionally, new tariffs proposed by the Trump administration, including a 25% duty on auto imports, could impact global economic growth and fuel demand.

What To Know: AccuWeather meteorologists <a href="https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/life-threatening-cold-to-blast-millions-across-central-eastern-us-into-weeks-end/1746445">warn</a> that "life-threatening" cold is moving across the central U.S. with the coldest conditions spreading east behind the track of a winter storm bringing arctic air that "will be painful, dangerous and damaging in some cases."

The price of natural gas is up more than 4% on Wednesday and nearly 16% since the beginning of 2025, according to TradingEconomics. The United States Natural Gas Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNG#NYSE">UNG</a>) which tracks the the daily percentage changes in natural gas prices is climbing higher on the cold weather forecast as well. 
Travel Delays: Travelers should expect changing conditions and possible delays Wednesday and into Thursday as well. According <a href="https://www.flightaware.com/live/cancelled/today">to data</a> from FlightAware, more than 450 flights have been cancelled and another 700 flights delayed. Cancellations and delays are expected to mount throughout the day. 
American Airlines Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>) and Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUV#NYSE">LUV</a>) are reporting the highest percentage of cancellations, with 4% and 1% of flights cancelled as of Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

Treasury yields fell following weaker retail sales data. Investors remained focused on Trump&#8217;s proposed reciprocal tariffs and broader economic policy moves, adding to market uncertainty amid recent inflation data and Federal Reserve commentary.
Economic data showed that January retail sales declined by 0.9% from the previous month, a significantly steeper drop than the expected 0.1% decrease.
