Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 7, 2025

<p>Dip-buying remained absent in early Friday trading in New York, with Wall Street deep in the red as global trade war fears continued to escalate, despite the March jobs report showed continued signs of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44645518/strong-jobs-report-offers-hope-but-will-it-be-enough-to-counter-tariff-turmoil">U.S. labor market resilience. </a></p>
<p>The U.S. economy added 228,000 jobs in March—the strongest gain since December 2024—sharply beating expectations of 135,000, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.</p>
<p>Still, the report did little to calm nerves. Investors fear it may be the last strong print for a while, with the economic impact of rising tariffs expected to seep into the data in the coming months.</p>
<p>The unemployment rate ticked up just 0.1 percentage points to 4.2%, remaining low by historical standards, while wage growth broadly aligned with forecasts. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% month-over-month and 3.8% year-over-year.</p>
<p>Wall Street remained deep in the red after China announced a retaliatory 34% tariff on U.S. goods—matching the rate imposed by President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> on Wednesday—intensifying fears of a full-blown trade war.</p>
<p>Trump took to Truth Social on Friday. "Great job numbers, far better than expected. It's already working. Hang tough, we can't lose!"</p>
<p>He added. "China played it wrong, they panicked," and reassured investors: "This is a great time to get rich—richer than ever before!"</p>
<p>Investors are now on edge, awaiting remarks from Fed Chair<strong> Jerome Powell</strong> at 11:25 a.m. ET on Friday, hoping for any hint of a dovish shift in policy tone.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wall Street In Bloodbath: Could Powell Halt The Bleeding? </h3>
<p>Here's how the key benchmarks moved at the open:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>S&amp;P 500</strong>, tracked by the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), was down 2.9% by 9:55 a.m. in New York.</li>
<li><strong>Dow Jones Industrial Average</strong>, tracked by the <strong>SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), fell 2.6%, officially entering correction territory after falling more than 10% from its late-2024 peak.</li>
<li><strong>Nasdaq-100</strong>, tracked by the <strong>Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), fell 2.9%, hitting a 20% decline from all-time highs, entering a bear market. </li>
<li><strong>Russell 2000</strong>, represented by the <strong>iShares Russell 2000 ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), fell 4.1%. </li>

<p>Every sector traded in the red, with heaviest losses concentrated in <strong>Energy</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), down 5%, and <strong>Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>), down 4%. </p>
<p>While stocks continued to slump, bonds attracted haven flows. Yields on 10-year Treasury notes fell by 10 basis points to 3.94%. The popular <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 1.5%. </p>

<p>Wall Street just got a wake-up call. According to JPMorgan analyst <strong>Maia G. Crook</strong>, the probability of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/recession">a U.S. recession</a> has surged to 60%, up from 40% last month, thanks to the latest round of tariff hikes.</p>

<p>The S&amp;P 500 fell nearly 4%, poised for its worst session since September 2022, and sank to a seven-month low. Small caps took the brunt of the sell-off, with the Russell 2000 plunging over 5% and officially entering a bear market, now down more than 20% from its 2024 peak.</p>
<p>Fears of retaliatory action from key U.S. trading partners dragged every major sector into the red, except for defensive plays like consumer staples and utilities.</p>
<p>Consumer discretionary stocks were slammed. Apparel names posted double-digit losses: <strong>Ralph Lauren</strong> <strong>Corp</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>), <strong>Nike Inc</strong>. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>), <strong>Lululemon Athletica Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) and <strong>Garmin Ltd. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GRMN#NYSE">GRMN</a>) each dropped between 10% and 16%.</p>
<p>Cruise lines were also hit hard: <strong>Norwegian Cruise Holdings Ltd.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) sank 13%, <strong>Carnival Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>) fell 10%, and <strong>Royal Caribbean Ltd</strong>. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) slid 9%.</p>
<p>Bond markets saw a mild flight to safety. Treasury yields edged lower, yet the U.S. dollar weakened 1.6%, with the DXY index heading for its worst day since November 2022.</p>
<p>Commodities weren't spared. Oil prices nosedived on fears of a global slowdown, worsened by OPEC+'s surprise move to raise output. West Texas Intermediate crude plunged 7.5%, slipping below $70 per barrel.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) showed relative resilience in the carnage, dipping just 1% and holding above $81,600.</p>

<p>Wall Street extends gains on Wednesday, as investors remain resilient in their risk appetite despite the looming announcement of sweeping trade tariffs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">by President <strong>Donald Trump</strong>.</a></p>
<p>The president is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/wgmKYg-zK9o">scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. ET</a> on what he dubbed "Liberation Day," with expectations pointing to the imposition of tariffs around 20% on a broad range of goods.</p>
<p>The <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong> is up 0.8%, aiming for what could become its third consecutive positive session. The <strong>Nasdaq 100</strong> is also rebounding strongly, rising 1.1%, while small-cap stocks outperform large caps, with the <strong>Russell 2000</strong> climbing 1.5%.</p>
<p>Nearly all sectors are in the green, except defensive consumer staples. Consumer discretionary and tech lead the way in performance.</p>

<p>Americans are still spending, but not as freely as before. JPMorgan analyst Richard Shane notes that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/consumer-spending">overall spending growth</a> slowed to 2.4% in March, down from earlier in the year. </p>
<p>Blame it on cautious consumers, a later Easter, or just a tough comparison to 2024 &#8211; but the numbers don't lie.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gen Z, Millennials Keep the Party Going</h2>
<p>Younger consumers aren't feeling the pinch just yet. Their spending shot up nearly 5% in March, well ahead of older generations, where spending has flatlined, says Shane. Whether it's streaming subscriptions, dining out, or the latest must-have gadgets, this cohort continues to drive the economy forward.</p>

<p>Travel-related purchases like airline tickets and hotels took a hit, reflecting a pullback in big-ticket splurges.</p>
<p>While the <strong>Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) is up 4.36% YTD, the <strong>Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) is down 9.88% YTD; down 5.88% over the past month alone.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gas Prices Offer A Surprise Relief</h2>
<p>Here's one bright spot: spending at gas stations plummeted over 10%, thanks to lower oil prices. The <strong>Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) has gained over 7% in the past month.</p>
<p>That's good news for middle- and lower-income households, as cheaper fuel means more cash for other necessities.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Health, Wellness Get A Boost</h2>
<p>One area still on the rise? Healthcare and pharmacy spending, which climbed 8%. Consumers are prioritizing health, perhaps a lingering effect of pandemic-era habits or simply an aging population driving demand.</p>
<p>With economic uncertainty looming, it's clear that consumers are tightening their wallets in some areas while splurging in others. </p>
<p>As Shane puts it, the data reveals a shift in priorities—where Gen Z swipes, and Boomers hesitate, shaping the spending landscape for the months ahead.</p>

<p>Markets faltered on Friday, with Wall Street reeling as investors hurried to shed risk in the face of mounting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">inflation and tariff uncertainties.</a></p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 fell 2.1% by 1:30 p.m. trading in New York, on track to end the week with losses. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 2.6%, and the Dow fell 1.7%. </p>
<p>All members of the Magnificent Seven group were in the red, with <strong>Amazon.com Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and <strong>Alphabet Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) marking the widest drops, both down 4.4%.</p>
<p>Earlier on Friday, the Fed's favorite inflation gauge – the core Personal Consumption Expenditure price index – rose 2.8% on a yearly basis in February, surprising estimates of 2.7%. </p>
<p>Investor anxiety deepened following the latest University of Michigan Survey of Consumers, which showed 5-year forward inflation expectations jumping to 4.1% — a 0.2-point increase from prior estimates and the highest reading since February 1993. As stocks fell in unison, a flight to safety ensued, sending gold up 1% to a record-breaking $3,090 per ounce. Treasury bonds also rallied, with yields declining across all maturities. </p>
<p>Price action in commodities was mixed with oil down 1% and natural gas up 2.4%. Sentiment in crypto also took a sharp hit, with <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down by 4% to below $84,000, flipping to weekly losses.</p>

<p>Wall Street dipped slightly on Thursday, with all major indexes edging into the red as investors digested President <strong>Donald Trump</strong>&#8216;s latest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44517885/trump-slaps-25-tariffs-on-autos-what-it-means-for-your-next-car-purchase">move on auto tariffs.</a></p>
<p>Late Wednesday, Trump announced a 25% tariff on all auto imports starting next week, with duties on auto parts set to follow in May.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For March 27, 2025

<p>U.S. stocks declined on Wednesday, with all major indices in the red by midday in New York, as renewed concerns <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">over tariffs rattled investors.</a></p>
<p>President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> signaled that new trade duties on automobiles could be announced as early as today, while market participants are also bracing for April 2, which marks the start of reciprocal tariffs.</p>
<p>Technology shares, particularly semiconductor stocks, led the selloff, dragging the Nasdaq 100 sharply lower and trimming much of its weekly gains. Shares of <strong>Nvidia Corp.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) tumbled 5.9%, on track for the worst daily loss since early March, as investors fear further restrictions on chip exports to China. The <strong>iShares Semiconductor ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>) fell 3.4%. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, blue-chip stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average were more resilient, supported by strength in the energy and consumer staples sectors. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), Wall Street's so-called "fear gauge," jumped 8% to 18.9.</p>
<p>The dollar and Treasury yields remained flat, reflecting a wait-and-see stance in the bond market amid uncertainty over the broader economic impact of potential tariffs.</p>
<p>In commodities, crude oil rose 1.4%, extending weekly gains to 2.5%—on track for its best week since early January—after a surprise drop in commercial inventories. Metals held steady, with copper holding record highs.</p>
<p>Bitcoin slipped 1% to $86,500 following a flat close the previous day.</p>

Stocks Slip As Tariff Fears Resurface: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

<p>April tends to be a favorable month for U.S. equities, and history makes a compelling case for this. Over the past 95 years, the S&amp;P 500 has gained an average of 1.1% in April, finishing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">higher 61% of the time.</a></p>
<p>In April, the index notched some of its most powerful monthly rallies in history, surging 43.6% in April 1933 and 17.9% in April 2020. Yet, it&#8217;s not always been a smooth ride — the worst April returns were a 20% crash in 1932 and a 9.5% drop in 1970.</p>
<p>Zooming in on the past three decades, April's track record becomes even more convincing. </p>
<p>The <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), the benchmark ETF tracking the S&amp;P 500, delivered an average gain of 1.9% over the last 30 Aprils, making it the second-best month of the year after November. SPY ended April in the green 77% of the time.</p>
<p>That said, 2025 has started on a cautious note. Through March 26, the S&amp;P 500 is down about 3% year-to-date. </p>
<p>Yet history suggests a seasonal tailwind could soon be at play — especially in four specific sectors that have consistently outperformed the broader market in April.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Financials (XLF): Banks Lead The Earnings Charge</h3>
<p>The <strong>Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) has historically been April&#8217;s top-performing sector. </p>
<p>Since its inception in 1999, XLF has risen an average of 2.7% during the month, with gains coming in 65% of the time. The seasonal strength is largely tied to the first-quarter earnings season, which kicks off in April and is typically led by major banks. Optimism surrounding annual earnings outlooks often provides a boost.</p>
<p>XLF has already outperformed the broader market in 2025, gaining 4.5% year-to-date. Within the sector, <strong>JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>)<strong> </strong>stands out: Over the past 45 years, JPM shares have climbed an average of 2.6% in April, delivering positive returns 68% of the time.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Consumer Discretionary (XLY): Big Tech Retailers Deliver Spring Strength</h3>
<p>The <strong>Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) also posted a strong seasonal performance, rising 2.4% on average in April over the last 26 years. It has a 65% winning rate during the month.</p>
<p>April is historically the best month for <strong>Amazon.com Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), with an average gain of 7.6% and a 70% success rate. </p>
<p>Likewise, <strong>Tesla Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a><strong>)</strong> tends to accelerate this time of year, with April returns averaging 5.9%, making it the second-strongest month for the electric vehicle maker, behind only November's 11.9% surge.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Materials (XLB): A Solid Spring For Commodities And Chemicals</h3>
<p>The <strong>Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLB#NYSE">XLB</a>) also delivered strong April sector performers. XLB has risen an average of 3.1% in April over the past 26 years, with a 65% win rate. The ETF is up about 3% year-to-date, suggesting some early momentum heading into April.</p>
<p>One heavyweight in the materials space, <strong>Linde plc </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LIN#NYSE">LIN</a>) — which represents roughly 20% of XLB's holdings — has consistently delivered in April. With 32 years of historical data, Linde has averaged a 3.5% gain in the month and ended April in positive territory 69% of the time.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Energy (XLE): The Strongest April Performer</h3>
<p>Energy stocks have historically delivered the most robust gains in April, with the <strong>Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) averaging a 4.1% return and closing the month higher 62% of the time. </p>
<p>Yet, it&#8217;s worth noting that this impressive figure is skewed by an extraordinary rebound in April 2020, when XLE surged nearly 30% following a historic 35% plunge in March 2020 — a period marked by collapsing oil prices and pandemic-driven market chaos. </p>
<p>Looking at long-term leaders within the sector, <strong>Exxon Mobil Corp. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) shares have gained an average of 2.7% in April over the past 40 years, while <strong>Chevron Corp. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) performed slightly better, rising 3.1% on average over the same period. </p>
