<a href="https://13f.info/13f/000095012325002701-berkshire-hathaway-inc-q4-2024">A regulatory filing</a> released on Feb. 14, showed that Berkshire slashed its stake in Bank of America (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>), cutting its shares from over 1 billion to about 680 million by the end of last year. The drop reduced Berkshire's ownership from over 13% to 11%, bringing the value of the investment from about $41 billion to under $30 billion.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strategic Portfolio Adjustments</h2>
Beyond Bank of America, Berkshire adjusted several other financial holdings. According to the filing, the firm sold 74% of its Citigroup (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>) stake, 18% of its Capital One (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COF#NYSE">COF</a>) position, and 54% of its shares in Nu Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NU#NYSE">NU</a>).&nbsp;
It also trimmed investments in Charter Communications (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CHTR#NASDAQ">CHTR</a>), Louisiana-Pacific (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LPX#NYSE">LPX</a>), and T-Mobile US (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TMUS#NASDAQ">TMUS</a>). The changes indicate a move away from financial stocks and select industries.
At the same time, Berkshire made a notable addition, buying a $1.2 billion stake in Constellation Brands (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STZ#NYSE">STZ</a>), the company behind popular beers like Corona and Modelo. As per market trends, consumer staples tend to hold up well in uncertain economic times, making this a strategic shift toward more stable investments.

Berkshire also increased its holdings in companies tied to steady consumer demand. Its stake in Domino's Pizza (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DPZ#NYSE">DPZ</a>) grew by 86%, and its investment in Pool Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/POOL#NASDAQ">POOL</a>) jumped by 48%.&nbsp;
These moves suggest confidence in businesses that remain relevant regardless of market conditions—whether people are tightening their budgets or not, they still order pizza and maintain their pools.
Not all holdings made the cut. Berkshire fully exited Ulta Beauty (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ULTA#NASDAQ">ULTA</a>) despite only acquiring shares in the second quarter of 2024.&nbsp;

It also sold off its positions in two major exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the S&amp;P 500—SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>). This suggests a more targeted approach rather than following the broader market.
Berkshire's cash pile has reached record levels. According to its <a href="https://www.berkshirehathaway.com/qtrly/3rdqtr24.pdf">financial reports</a>, the company sold about $133 billion worth of stocks in the first nine months of 2024 while buying less than $6 billion.&nbsp;
Share buybacks also slowed, with under $3 billion spent compared to nearly $70 billion over the previous four years, <a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/news/warren-buffett-dumped-stocks-built-a-dollar300-billion-cash-pile-and-updated-his/pgecrnn">according to Business Insider</a>.&nbsp; These moves helped Berkshire's cash reserves soar past $300 billion for the first time, nearly doubling from $168 billion at the start of the year, the report added.&nbsp;

Berkshire Hathaway Dumps Ulta Beauty, Citi, And ETFs – But Buffett Just Bet $1.2 Billion On This Alcohol Giant

The Bank of Montreal launched five new exchange-traded notes (ETNs) Thursday, expanding its range of leveraged and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/leveraged-etfs">inverse investment products</a>. 
The Canadian banking firm has also been quietly ramping up its Bitcoin ETF holdings, reflecting a growing interest in the cryptocurrency market.
For the uninitiated, ETNs are mostly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">similar to ETFs</a>. The difference is they invest in debt like bonds. Also, they attract lesser taxes because they do not pay dividends.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Fresh Lineup Of Leveraged And Inverse ETNs</h2>
BMO's latest ETNs target the <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/bmo-and-rex-shares-launch-us-big-banks-and-us-big-oil-leveraged-inverse-leveraged">energy </a>sector through the Solactive MicroSectors U.S. Big Oil Index, which consists of major oil players such as Exxon Mobil (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>), Valero Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VLO#NYSE">VLO</a>), Phillips 66 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PSX#NYSE">PSX</a>), Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OXY#NYSE">OXY</a>), and Chevron (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>). The bank has introduced two ETNs for investors with opposing market views:
MicroSectors U.S. Big Oil 3X Leveraged ETNs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRGU#NYSE">NRGU</a>), which seeks to generate three times the daily return of the index, and MicroSectors U.S. Big Oil -3X Inverse Leveraged ETNs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRGD#NYSE">NRGD</a>), which provides the inverse, delivering negative three times the index's daily movement.
These products allow investors to make tactical bets on the energy market, especially as oil prices remain highly sensitive to geopolitical and economic changes.
BMO hasn&#8217;t left the financial sector behind, with new leveraged and inverse ETNs tied to the Solactive MicroSectors U.S. Big Banks Index. This index tracks heavyweights such as JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>), Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>), Citigroup (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>), and Bank of America.
The MicroSectors U.S. Big Banks 3X Leveraged ETNs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BNKU#NYSE">BNKU</a>) provides three times the daily return of the index. On the other hand, the MicroSectors U.S. Big Banks -3X Inverse Leveraged ETNs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BNKD#NYSE">BNKD</a>) moves in the opposite direction, offering negative three times the daily performance.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BMO's Growing Crypto Bet</h2>
BMO has also recently made a significant push into Bitcoin ETFs. According to a February <a href="https://www.binance.com/en/square/post/20289730836265">report </a>from Binance, which cited an SEC filing by BMO, the bank has upped its Bitcoin ETF holdings from $13 million to $150 million, a staggering 1053.85% increase in just one quarter.
Regulatory filings submitted to the U.S. SEC on January 13 revealed that BMO had allocated $139 million to BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin ETFs, with the remaining $11 million divided among ETFs from ARK 21Shares, Grayscale, and Fidelity.
The leveraged and inverse ETNs cater to active traders looking for higher exposure to high-momentum sectors, while the Bitcoin ETF investment signals institutional optimism in crypto's long-term potential.

Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>) shares are trading slightly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher in the premarket session on Friday.</a>
The Financial Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/7ab931b7-482d-42ae-bd8e-53451ddc7578" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports </a>that the bank is reportedly shifting its diversity policies for a more inclusive employee base.
In the wake of Donald Trump&#8217;s return to the White House, which has sparked a broader backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI targets, the report notes that Citigroup has decided to scale back its diversity efforts.
In a memo to employees on Thursday, CEO Jane Fraser announced that the bank would no longer set aspirational diversity representation goals unless mandated by local law. Furthermore, the bank will no longer require &#8220;diverse slates of candidates&#8221; or &#8220;diverse panels of interviewers&#8221; in its hiring practices, The Financial Times adds.
These changes mark a significant departure from the company&#8217;s previous DEI policies, which had included specific diversity targets for roles ranging from assistant vice presidents to managing directors.

For instance, the bank&#8217;s 2022 goals aimed for 43.5% of women, 11.5% Black, and 16% Latino employees in these positions, the report further notes.
The announcement also included a rebranding of Citi&#8217;s &#8220;Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Talent Management&#8221; team, which will now be known as &#8220;Talent Management and Engagement.&#8221;
Fraser explained that these changes were in response to shifting dynamics in diversity initiatives across U.S. institutions and stated that further updates could follow in the coming weeks.

CEO&nbsp;Julie Sweet informed staff in a memo that the company will begin &#8220;sunsetting&#8221; its diversity goals set in 2017, along with career development programs aimed at specific demographic groups.
This move follows an evaluation of the company&#8217;s internal policies in light of the evolving political climate in the U.S., including recent Executive Orders that Accenture must comply with.
