Michael Gayed highlighted that tariffs could also lead to layoffs as companies struggle to balance rising costs. "If tariffs become a bigger thing in the new year, it's reasonable to think that companies could consider layoffs to balance out some of the additional costs, if they don't pass them entirely on to the consumer," he said.
The expert sounded the alarm over renewed inflation risks as periods of Fed easing after extended tightening cycles have triggered inflationary surges.
"The U.S. economy experienced a huge second wave of inflation back in the late 1970s after the Fed brought interest rates way down," said Gayed.
 Inflation had dropped from 11% to 4% before surging back to 14%. With major central banks globally expected to continue rate cuts in the coming quarters, a similar scenario cannot be ruled out.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Risks: Correction Ahead?</h3>
While stocks have climbed in tandem with economic strength, some experts are urging caution. 
Veteran Wall Street investor Ed Yardeni said Trump's initial flurry of executive orders—expected to include new tariffs and immigration actions—could unsettle markets.
Yardeni highlighted a possible 10% correction in the stock market, though he remained optimistic about the broader outlook.
"We can't rule out a 10% stock market correction, but we would view that as a buying opportunity rather than as a reason to panic out of the market since we don't expect a recession or a bear market. We are still targeting 7000 on the S&amp;P 500 by the end of next year," he said.
Goldman Sachs has also flagged a potential market correction risk, citing heightened uncertainty driven by reaccelerating inflation and policy shifts expected under Donald Trump&#8217;s administration, including tariffs and fiscal stimulus measures.

Sheinbaum told reporters she nevertheless felt certain that Mexico was going to have good relations with Trump.
"And we are going to collaborate and understand each other with the government of President Trump. I am sure of it&#8230;defending our sovereignty as a free, independent, and sovereign country."
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Not The First Go Round For Trump Vs. Sheinbaum</h2>
Trump butted heads with Sheinbaum, a Nobel Prize-winning climate scientist, practically since she was <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/06/39140057/mexicos-first-female-president-faces-persistent-challenges-drug-cartels-border-issues-repairing-">elected by a landslide</a> in October 2024. Their initial conflict began when Trump <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42178994/trump-says-he-will-impose-25-tariffs-on-canada-mexico-on-first-day-of-office-and-extra-tariffs-on-china-until-they-pay-attention">announced in late November</a> that he was intending to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican imports. Sheinbaum responded that Mexico would do the same if the tariffs went into effect.
Addressing the U.S.'s fentanyl crisis during that same period, Trump essentially laid the blame on Mexico. Again, Sheinbaum begged to differ.
"<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/11/42225423/mexico-president-claudia-sheinbaum-to-trump-neither-threats-nor-tariffs-will-solve-your-fentanyl-crisis">Neither threats nor tariffs</a> will solve the migration or the drug abuse phenomenon in the US," she <a href="https://x.com/Claudiashein/status/1861558804652999130" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> at the time. She called for collaborative solutions to mitigate the escalating drug crisis.
Trump has also indicated he would deport all undocumented individuals to Mexico regardless of where they originally came from. Sheinbaum initially pushed back on that plan though she <a href="https://www.univision.com/noticias/inmigracion/mexico-abre-la-posibilidad-de-recibir-a-migrantes-no-mexicanos-que-deporte-donald-trump">told Univision</a> recently that Mexico will accept deportees but with conditions, which include the right to limit people of certain nationalities. She added that Mexico may also request compensation.
Meanwhile, other countries that have found themselves the target of Trump's territorial machinations are not as good-humored as Sheinbaum. The President-elect's refusal to rule out using military force to retake <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/events/25/01/42860583/trump-floats-canada-as-51st-us-state-says-hes-ready-to-use-economic-force-to-achieve-it" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Panama Canal</a> and to get his hands firmly on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/01/42857403/trump-sends-don-jr-on-mission-to-get-the-deal-done-and-make-greenland-part-of-our-nation">Greenland</a> has upset leaders as well as residents in both places. Then, of course, there's Canada but surely the president-elect was jesting when he suggested it be named the 51st state.

Trump And Mexican President Sheinbaum's Spirited Clash Over Territorial Renaming, Tariffs And Cartels

Just a few days ago, markets were encouraged by the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42789867/chinese-stocks-end-2024-in-green-after-a-3-year-retreat-franklin-ftse-china-etf-ishares-msci-china-etf-and-more-i">rebound in Chinese stocks</a> in 2024, after a three-year losing streak. However, a cloud of uncertainty looms over Chinese stocks and ETFs with exposure to them.
The Biden administration's call to blacklist two more Chinese tech giants—Tencent Holdings and Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL)—has sent shockwaves through global markets, as investors anticipate its impact on the already precarious <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">U.S.-China economic ties</a>.
Tencent, the world's largest gaming publisher, and CATL saw their shares plunge on Jan. 6.

Notable ETFs feeling the heat of being on high alert include iShares MSCI China ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCHI#NASDAQ">MCHI</a>), which allocates the biggest chunk of its holdings (15.40%) to Tencent. The net asset value inched down 1% on Jan. 7.
SPDR S&amp;P China ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GXC#NYSE">GXC</a>): Known for its diversified holdings, this fund also allocates 11.42%, its largest for a single security, to Tencent. Other major Chinese firms like Alibaba (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) and Meituan also hold key spots in the portfolio.
Invesco China Technology ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CQQQ#NYSE">CQQQ</a>), which dedicates 100% of its assets to Chinese technology stocks, is particularly sensitive to geopolitical developments. Moreover, Tencent takes up 10.76% of the total assets.
Additionally, ETFs with heavy exposure to Tesla stock, like the Simplify Volt TSLA Revolution ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TESL#NYSE">TESL</a>) has also come in the line of fire, as CATL is a key battery supplier to the EV maker.
The move to add Tencent and CATL to a growing roster of &#8220;Chinese military companies&#8221; was part of the U.S.'s counteractive effort to China's military and industrial ambitions. While the designation doesn&#8217;t impose immediate sanctions, it discourages U.S. firms from doing business with these entities, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-07/us-blacklist-of-china-s-tech-giants-risks-even-faster-decoupling?srnd=homepage-asia&amp;sref=TBDibEcD">notes </a>Bloomberg, a sentiment that trickles down into investor psyche as well.
The blacklist now includes 134 Chinese companies, four of which happen to be China's top 20 by market capitalization, collectively valued at nearly $1 trillion.
ETF investors are now closely watching developments as funds with direct or indirect exposure to Chinese companies may face increased volatility.

Is The Stock Market Closed For Jimmy Carter's State Funeral?

Costco Wholesale Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COST#NASDAQ">COST</a>) reaffirmed its retail dominance, reporting an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/retail-sales/25/01/42888095/costco-stock-climbs-after-december-net-sales-up-99-year-over-year" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">impressive 9.8% growth</a> in December U.S. core sales. 
This result exceeded Wall Street&#8217;s 5.2% estimate and topped JPMorgan&#8217;s optimistic 6.7% forecast.
JPMorgan analyst Christopher Horvers credited Costco's results to "market share gains, a shorter season, and a bit better consumer" working in tandem.
E-commerce surged 35.7% year-over-year, partly thanks to Black Friday sales booked in December due to a holiday calendar shift.
Meanwhile, international operations weren't far behind, with core comps climbing 10.3% in Canada and 9.8% across other regions. "No other major retailer has succeeded in every country it entered," Horvers noted, underscoring Costco's unmatched global consistency.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">High-Income Costco Customers</h2>
While the shorter holiday season helped December's numbers, JPMorgan's Horvers pointed to a broader trend: improving consumer spending among higher-income shoppers. 
"We believe this indicates improvement in the consumer spending backdrop, particularly the upper-middle class and higher-income consumer," he said, highlighting Costco's ability to attract these coveted segments.
Costco's diverse product offerings also played a major role. Fresh foods like meat and produce were up high single digits, while non-food categories—led by jewelry, toys, and gift cards—jumped to the high teens.
Ancillary services like pharmacy and optical rebounded, benefiting from a holiday lift, and even electronics like TVs saw sequential improvement.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2025 &amp; Beyond: $1,065 In Sight</h2>
Looking ahead, Horvers remains optimistic, maintaining an Overweight rating on the stock, though he adjusted the price target slightly to $1,065. 
Costco's unique ability to grow "across its box and geographies," coupled with its emerging advertising revenue stream, makes it a standout in retail. "The COST fundamental story challenges all of the best companies," Horvers emphasized.
For investors, Costco's momentum appears unstoppable. In a world where growth is hard to come by, Horvers said it best: "Aside from AMZN, no scaled retailer is growing at this pace." 
The retail king is poised to stay on its throne, and for shareholders, the journey to $1,065 looks well within reach.

The funds' trends are "moderately bearish," with slight selling pressure, reflecting broader uncertainty in the crypto market.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bitcoin's Rocky Road</h2>
The performance of these ETFs isn't happening in a vacuum. Bitcoin itself has seen a recent pullback after its strong 2024 rally, with Unity Wallet COO James Toledano offering key insights:
"Bitcoin's sudden decline likely reflects a combination of macroeconomic and market-specific pressures. Concerns over slower-than-anticipated Fed rate cuts and robust U.S. economic data are weighing on speculative assets," Toledano said in an emailed statement.
He also pointed to profit-taking following Bitcoin's 2024 surge, largely fueled by optimism surrounding Donald Trump's pro-crypto stance.
"Now everyone is holding their breath for Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20. The expectation is that crypto will surge again—this is very much the downturn before the storm," Toledano added.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Road Ahead</h2>
As Bitcoin ETFs enter their second year, investor focus will likely shift to policy changes and market dynamics under Trump's administration. With Bitcoin's volatility showing no signs of fading, these ETFs remain a high-stakes bet for risk-tolerant traders.
From day one fireworks to today's mixed signals, Bitcoin ETFs have proven one thing: they're not for the faint of heart.
