Amer Sports, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AS#NYSE">AS</a>) reported better-than-expected first-quarter FY25 results.
On the economic data front, the U.S. Redbook Index rose by 5.4% year-over-year in the week ending May 17.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with energy, consumer discretionary, and communication services stocks recording the biggest losses on Tuesday. However, utilities and health care stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.

TJX Gears Up For Q1 Print; Here Are The Recent Forecast Changes From Wall Street's Most Accurate Analysts

Economist Justin Wolfers is once again directing criticism at President Donald Trump, this time taking aim at the administration's sweeping tax and spending bill, which Trump has described as &#8220;one big, beautiful bill.&#8221;
What Happened: Speaking on the TheRickWilson podcast on Tuesday, Wolfers said the current budget being debated includes deep cuts to social safety nets like Medicare and Medicaid, while preserving or expanding benefits for the ultra-wealthy.
&#8220;This one seems to bundle up a whole bunch of things that are going to cause social cost and economic cost to a lot of people,&#8221; he says, adding that it is &#8220;stacked towards the upper end of the upper end of the upper end of the economic food chain.&#8221;

The University of Michigan professor later emphasized the kind of impact this type of fiscal policy will have on everyday Americans. &#8220;If you drove yourself to work, you're one of the people who's probably going to get less out of this,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It's just pure reverse Robin Hood.&#8221;
Wolfers argues that budgets aren&#8217;t just economic plans, but rather a &#8220;statement of values&#8221; and ultimately a &#8220;moral statement.&#8221; Referring to the cuts made to Medicare and Medicaid, he says, &#8220;If your values are that you don't want to make sure poor people have health insurance, that's your statement.&#8221;
The economist also warned that the budget's structure could validate recent concerns about U.S. creditworthiness, pointing to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45484954/treasury-secretary-bessent-addresses-moodys-downgrade-and-tariff-impact-n-walmart">Moody's downgrade</a> as a rational response to persistent fiscal instability. 
Rising bond yields will increase borrowing costs significantly, Wolfers says, &#8220;a small percent times a humongous number is a very large number.&#8221;
Why It Matters: Other prominent economists have since weighed in on this bill, echoing similar views. Craig Shapiro posted on X, saying that the bill &#8220;will explode the deficit while enriching the highest decile of Americans at the expense of the lowest decile.&#8221;
&#8220;Another opportunity squandered and further proof that the Republican Party continues to cater to the wealthiest Americans time and time again,&#8221; he says.

The Democrats have since called it a fresh attempt by the GOP to gut the Affordable Care Act.
The bill does include some provisions Trump campaigned on, such as eliminating <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45533526/trumps-no-tax-on-tips-agenda-gets-a-boost-as-senate-approves-bill-ted-cruz-praises-presidents-political-genius-for-backing-the-idea">federal taxes on tips and overtime</a> pay, which is finding support.

The company also raised its full-year 2025 guidance. The company now expects full-year revenue of $9.17 billion to $9.19 billion, up from prior guidance of $9.14 billion to $9.19 billion. The company now anticipates full-year adjusted earnings of $3.26 to $3.28 per share, up from prior guidance of $3.18 to $3.24 per share, per Benzinga Pro. Palo Alto shares fell 3.9% to $186.92 in the after-hours trading session.</li>

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) CEO Elon Musk believes Tesla owners would be able to add their vehicles to the company's fleet of self-driving cars, as he says no to any potential deal with Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>).
What Happened: "We have millions of cars that will be able to operate autonomously. And I should say that it&#8217;s a combination of a Tesla-owned fleet and also enabling Tesla owners to be able to add or subtract their car to the fleet," Musk said in an <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2025/05/20/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-theres-no-need-for-tesla-to-buy-uber.html">interview</a> with CNBC's David Faber.
Musk believes that it could be a mix of Uber and Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABNB#NASDAQ">ABNB</a>), where Tesla owners could add their cars to the autonomous fleet and earn money.
"Tesla has all the ingredients necessary to offer a vast self-driving fleet, overnight," Musk said in the interview, reiterating the company's FSD technology's capabilities.
Why It Matters: The interview and Musk's comments outlined the billionaire's vision for the company's future, which focuses heavily on FSD and autonomous driving.
