Verizon Communications shares are trading lower after Wolfe Research downgraded the stock from outperfrom to peer perform.

Wall Street's losing streak extended into Tuesday, with stocks deepening their slump as continued trade war fears rattled investor sentiment. 
The Nasdaq 100 slipped 0.6% by midday trading in New York after suffering on Monday its worst single-day drop since September 2022<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44255030/nasdaq-100-trades-below-its-200-day-moving-average-history-says-you-should-buy-the-dip-now"> in the prior session. </a>
The broader S&amp;P 500 slid to a seven-month low, amplifying concerns over the market's near-term trajectory.
The proportion of S&amp;P 500 stocks trading above their 200-day moving average has now shrunk to 44%, the lowest since November 2023. Each sector traded in the red, highlighting broad-based market weakness. 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was the biggest underperformer on Tuesday, with industrial stocks bearing the brunt of escalating trade tensions.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump escalated trade tensions by raising tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports to 50%, responding to Ontario's move to levy a 25% tariff on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44253100/trump-slaps-50-tariff-on-canadian-steel-aluminum-threatens-auto-industry">electricity exports to the U.S. </a>
In a Truth Social post, Trump announced he had instructed the Commerce secretary to enforce the additional 25% tariff, which will take effect Wednesday morning.
On the macroeconomic front, job openings in the U.S. showed unexpected resilience, rising by 232,000 to 7.74 million in January from a downwardly revised 7.51 million in December. The reading exceeded market forecasts of 7.63 million, suggesting positive labor market news despite broader economic jitters.
The U.S. dollar continued its descent, with the dollar index slipping to six-month lows. Treasury yields edged higher ahead of Wednesday's closely watched inflation report for February, signaling that investors were not rushing into safe-haven bonds despite the ongoing market turbulence.
Commodities, meanwhile, found favor as investors sought inflation hedges. Gold advanced 1%, silver surged 2.3% and copper climbed 3%, reflecting renewed demand for tangible assets in a climate of heightened financial instability.
Bitcoin endured a wild session, initially plunging to an intraday low of $76,600 — its lowest level since Nov. 10, 2024 — before rebounding to post a 3.9% gain on the day.

Wall Street Drop Deepens As Trade War Fears Escalate, S&P 500 Hits 7-Month Lows: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VZ#NYSE">VZ</a>) shares are trading lower Tuesday after the company laid out expectations for a soft first quarter at a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/03/g44188467/verizon-to-speak-at-deutsche-bank-conference-march-11">Deutsche Bank conference</a>.
What Happened: Speaking at a Deutsche Bank conference on Tuesday, a Verizon executive said first-quarter growth will be &#8220;probably soft,&#8221; according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.
CNBC reported Tuesday morning that the Verizon executive also noted that Verizon has seen elevated levels of competitive intensity in the quarter. 
In a regulatory filing, Verizon said it expects Verizon Consumer Group postpaid phone net additions for the&nbsp;first quarter to be affected by three to five basis points of churn. The company attributed the softness to recent pricing actions, as well as postpaid phone gross additions that were &#8220;flat to slightly down&#8221; from the prior year&#8217;s period.
Verizon said it remains confident in its full-year 2025 guidance. The company noted that it expects to generate more Consumer postpaid phone net additions in 2025 than it did in 2024.
Verizon isn&#8217;t due to report quarterly earnings until sometime next month. Analysts currently expect the company to report earnings of $1.15 per share and revenue of $33.47 billion, according to estimates from <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.

The Nearest Neighbor Attack was first disclosed in November 2024 and demonstrates the rising risk of state-sponsored bad actors. APT-28, which is also known as Fancy Bear, is a Russian state-sponsored cyber espionage group.

"Our 2025 report shed light on these emerging threats and provides actionable strategies for enterprises to protect their assets and data in an increasingly complex threat landscape."

Why It's Important: The report highlights several examples of Russia and Chinese groups using cyberattacks on the United States.
The Salt Typhoon, for example, was able to infiltrate at least nine major firms<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41200026/chinese-hackers-breach-at-t-verizon-networks-in-major-wiretap-data-theft-putting-us-national-securit"> including telecommunications giants </a>Verizon (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VZ#NYSE">VZ</a>) and AT&amp;T (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/T#NYSE">T</a>).

A new report suggests that Musk's SpaceX may receive potential funding from the FAA.
What Happened: While Musk's Starlink segment of SpaceX previously <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41113339/elon-musk-resumes-slamming-fccs-decision-to-deny-starlink-885m-subsidy-after-fema-sends-its-terminal">clashed with government agencies</a> like the Federal Communications Commission, the unit could land several new government deals under the Trump presidency.
Starlink could be the winner of a $2.4 billion FAA contract, taking over from Verizon Communications (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VZ#NYSE">VZ</a>). The FAA has directed its staff to find tens of millions of dollars for a Starlink deal according to a Rolling Stone <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/elon-musk-starlink-faa-officials-find-funding-1235285246/">report</a>.
Sources said the FAA has told employees to find money for the Starlink deal verbally, a rare occurrence that could indicate that "someone does not want a paper trail."
Musk, who is a key figure in Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, has sought to fire hundreds of employees at the FAA.
The Verizon deal for air traffic control has been a hot topic in recent weeks with reports that Starlink could end up with the contract, a move that could be a conflict of interest given Musk's role within the new White House administration, according to Rolling Stone.
Congresswoman Rosa DeLaura (D-Conn.) and Congressman James Clyburn (D-S.C.) called a reported deal between the FAA and Starlink "a glaring conflict of interest," as <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/622502/faa-orders-staff-find-funding-starlink-verizon-deal">reported </a>by The Verge. The members of Congress said a potential deal would "put Elon Musk's personal wealth over the American people's lives."
The billionaire has claimed that Verizon's communications system with air traffic control is "breaking down rapidly." Musk later issued a correction and said the Verizon system was "not yet operational."
