Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said on Thursday that President Donald Trump&#8216;s tariffs will cause an &#8220;oil crisis-like shock&#8221; to the economy, simultaneously spiking prices and unemployment while shrinking productive capacity.
What Happened: Summers <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-02/summers-says-trump-tariffs-to-impose-oil-shock-type-economic-hit">told</a> Bloomberg Television that the tariffs should be seen as &#8220;a supply shock,&#8221; comparable to &#8220;an oil-price spike or earthquake or a drought,&#8221; with significant economic consequences.
Potential economic losses, according to Summers, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44622754/tariffs-are-most-expensive-and-masochistic-could-cost-30-trillion-to-the-economy-erasing-300k-per-family-explains">may amount to $30 trillion</a>, or significantly more than $300,000 for a household of four people.

Condemning the measure as &#8220;typical unilateral bullying,&#8221; <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/04/44620889/trumps-liberation-day-tariffs-roil-markets-as-china-slams-typical-unilateral-bullying-asian-markets-plunge">China threatened to take retaliatory action</a>. What Happened: According to reports <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/google-advanced-talks-rent-nvidia-ai-servers-coreweave">from</a> The Information, Google is in talks with the recently listed CoreWeave Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRWV#NASDAQ">CRWV</a>) to rent the latter&#8217;s Nvidia servers, which are equipped with the latest generation Blackwell chips.
Additionally, the search giant might also rent space in CoreWeave&#8217;s data centers to install its own Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips, which were <a href="https://benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/25/02/43570410/broadcoms-trillion-dollar-run-analyst-expects-asic-to-take-10-15-market-share-backed-by-ai-compute-demand">made in collaboration with Broadcom Inc.</a> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>).
CoreWeave, which was listed on the Nasdaq late last week, is up 53% from its offer price of $40, owing to its multi-billion dollar deals with several heavy-hitters in the AI space. Currently, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) accounts for 60% of the company&#8217;s $1.9 billion in annual revenue, but it is quickly diversifying.
In addition to its talks with Google, CoreWeave recently signed a 5-year deal with OpenAI worth $12 billion for its growing AI infrastructure needs. 
Why It Matters: Whether it is Google, Nvidia&#8217;s backlogs, or <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44601565/coreweave-surges-42-in-post-ipo-rally-as-nvidia-backed-ai-firm-recovers-from-weak-debut">CoreWeave&#8217;s rally</a>, they all point to the same thing &#8211; the unrelenting demand for AI computing, which is only set to grow by leaps and bounds.
While Google and Nvidia are both down 17% and 20% year-to-date, owing to high valuations and turmoil surrounding tariffs, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang did not hesitate when saying that reasoning models will require at least 100 times more computing power than the current generation models that power the likes of ChatGPT.
In other words, we&#8217;ve barely scratched the surface in terms of AI infrastructure demand, with plenty more growth to be had across all these stocks.

Google In Talks To Rent Nvidia's Blackwell Chips From CoreWeave: Report

Shares of Penguin Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PENG#NASDAQ">PENG</a>) rose sharply in today's pre-market trading after the company posted better-than-expected results for its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PENG/earnings">second quarter on Wednesday</a>.
The company said it sees FY25 net sales growth of 17% year-over-year +/-3% and adjusted EPS of $1.60 +/- $0.10.

The controversy erupted when Tron (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/trx/usd">TRX</a>) founder Justin Sun raised concerns about the company&#8217;s solvency and its ability to honor client redemptions.

Following the allegations, FDUSD, currently the fifth-largest stablecoin by market capitalization, fell to $0.87, 13% below the $1 value it is supposed to trade at all times. It regained some of its value as of this writing.
Why It Matters:&nbsp; Launched in 2023, FDUSD is a 1:1 dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Hong Kong-based First Digital Labs, a subsidiary of the First Digital Group.
To ensure their value remains consistent, stablecoins are backed by reserves of the corresponding fiat currency, in this case, the dollar, held in regulated financial institutions. The 1:1 backing means customers can theoretically redeem one unit of the stablecoin for one unit of the underlying fiat currency at any time. 
Stablecoin depeggings have been rare. USD Coin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/">USDC</a>) lost its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/are-stablecoins-safe-right-now">dollar peg</a> for a few days in March 2023 after billions in its reserves were stuck with the collapsed Silicon Valley bank.

FDUSD Issuer Assures Funds Are Backed 1:1, To Pursue Legal Action After Justin Sun's Allegations Send Stablecoin Below $1

Former Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence H. Summers, also known as Larry Summers, described the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump as the &#8220;most expensive and masochistic&#8221; move by the U.S., which could roil the economy, erasing trillions of dollars.
What Happened: Summers explained the calculation behind the magnitude of losses that the economy can endure in a series of X posts. According to him, the stock futures fell 2-3% after Trump's announcement, erasing about $1.5 trillion, and the market had already priced in some of the impact in the days leading up to April 2nd.
Thus, he estimated losses of about $4 trillion in the stock market, which represents the lost corporate profits. Additionally, Summers explains that &#8220;Corporate profits are about 10 percent of GDP, so very conservatively the present value of economic loss is 5 times the stock market loss or $20 trillion.&#8221;

Acuity, RH And 3 Stocks To Watch Heading Into Thursday

As President Donald Trump lights the global economy on fire in his bid to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44621408/market-access-has-a-price-trump-unveils-list-of-tariffs-countries-targeted">reduce America&#8217;s $1.2 trillion annual trade deficit</a>, a few astute observers on X have uncovered the math that went into arriving at the tariffs that other countries charge the United States, which ultimately led to the reciprocal tariffs that the US will now be imposing on them.
What Happened: A post questioned Trump&#8217;s credibility on the subject of tariffs. James Surowiecki, a writer for The Atlantic and Fast Company had a tough time making sense of some of the figures shared by the White House on Wednesday evening, especially those about tariffs imposed by other countries on American exports.

He knew something wasn&#8217;t adding up, since South Korea, a country with which the US has a trade agreement was not charging 50% tariffs on US exports, as reported in the graphic released by the White House. After initially chalking it all up to made-up figures, he soon arrived at the absurd calculations that went into them.

Surowiecki says that the tariff figures were calculated by merely dividing the US&#8217; trade deficit with a particular country by the said country&#8217;s total exports to the U.S. He even went on to illustrate it by giving the example of Indonesia, on which Trump now plans to impose 32% reciprocal tariffs.
He further adds &#8216;I cannot believe they decided to just divide the trade deficit by imports and tell people that&#8217;s the tariff rate,&#8217; and wonders how U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signed off on something like this. 
Why It Matters: Others are now waking up to these calculations, such as the <a href="https://x.com/Geiger_Capital/status/1907568233239949431">popular X finance influencer</a> Geiger Capital, and the Sri Lankan publication Economynext, which <a href="https://economynext.com/sri-lankas-88-pct-tax-on-us-arrived-at-by-dividing-trade-deficit-213077/">questioned</a> how the U.S. figures were calculated.
