As the Federal Reserve signals a one-and-done approach to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">rate cuts in 2025</a>, investors are being forced to rethink what "safe" really means.
According to Violeta Todorova, Senior Research Analyst at Leverage Shares, market participants face a complicated mix of "slowing growth, rising inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions, and structural changes in the global demand for U.S. Treasuries."
"Historically viewed as a volatility hedge, Treasuries are facing a credibility test," Todorova told Benzinga. She also noted that recent tariff-induced volatility has triggered a selloff in U.S. government bonds, clouding their reliability.

When it comes to staying defensive but not missing upside, Todorova suggests a diversified approach: "The best way to stay defensive while still participating in potential upside is to maintain broad diversification, focusing on quality and resilience." 
Think dividend-paying large caps via the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VIG#NYSE">VIG</a>) or defensive plays like the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) and the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>).
One final piece of advice: "Resist the urge to time the market or make aggressive moves in response to headlines." Sound familiar?

American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>) stock is trading lower on Thursday after it reported mixed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/g44974946/american-airlines-reports-first-quarter-2025-financial-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">first-quarter 2025</a> results and withdrew its full-year outlook.
The airline&#8217;s operating revenue declined slightly to $12.55 billion (down 0.15% year-over-year), missing the consensus of $12.36 billion. Total unit revenue rose 0.7% year-over-year, driven by strong international performance.
The airline continued rebuilding revenue from indirect channels and remains on track to return to historical levels by year-end. However, progress was offset by economic uncertainty and the impact of the American Eagle Flight 5342 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/travel/25/01/43343648/all-60-passengers-4-crew-members-onboard-american-airlines-jet-feared-dead-after-midair-collision-official-says" rel="noreferrer noopener">accident</a>.

The adjusted operating margin was negative at 1.6%, compared to 0.6% a year ago. The company reported an adjusted loss per share of $(0.59), down from $(0.34) a year ago but above the consensus of $(0.65).
The company generated an operating cash flow of $2.456 billion for the quarter, up from $2.18 billion a year ago, and a free cash flow of ~$1.711 billion.
American cut total debt by $1.2 billion in the quarter, bringing reductions since 2021 to $16.6 billion. It aims to lower debt below $35 billion by 2027 and ended the quarter with $10.8 billion in liquidity, plus over $23 billion in borrowing capacity.
The first quarter&#8217;s revenue passenger miles declined by 1.9%. Available seat miles were down by 0.9%, and the passenger load factor was 80.6% compared to 81.5% in the same quarter last year.
The average aircraft fuel price, including related taxes (dollars per gallon), fell 13.3% YoY to $2.48, and the operating cost per ASM rose by 2.9%.

American and Citi are progressing toward their expanded AAdvantage partnership, which is set to launch in 2026. In Q1, AAdvantage enrollments rose 6%, and co-branded card spending grew 8%, reflecting strong loyalty program engagement.
Q2 Outlook: Based on current demand and fuel trends, American Airlines expects adjusted EPS between $0.50 and $1.00 versus the consensus of $0.99.
Full-year 2025 guidance has been withdrawn, with an update planned once economic conditions stabilize.
&#8220;The actions American has taken over the past several years to refresh our fleet, manage costs and strengthen our balance sheet position us well for the uncertainty our industry is facing,&#8221; stated American&#8217;s CEO Robert Isom.
&#8220;The resiliency of the&nbsp;American Airlines&nbsp;team, combined with the investments we have made to differentiate our network, product and customer experience, give us extreme confidence in our ability to navigate the current environment and deliver strong results for the long term,&#8221; he added.

Kiyosaki has offered a significantly bullish outlook for Bitcoin in 2025 despite recent market struggles. In a Sunday X <a href="https://x.com/theRealKiyosaki/status/1913968666800214109?t=GdoYaEttpaXzrdDf8VAHLg&amp;s=19">post</a>, the entrepreneur asserted that he believed that the asset could more than double in price before year-end.
&#8220;BITCOIN is $84k today. Strongly believe Bitcoin will reach $180k to $200k in 2025,&#8221; he wrote.
Kiyosaki&#8217;s recent 2025 Bitcoin price prediction comes days after he <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/04/44889273/robert-kiyosakis-bitcoin-forecast-could-1-million-be-realistic">argued</a> that the asset would surpass the $1 million price mark by 2035.
The entrepreneur&#8217;s bullishness on the leading cryptocurrency is based on a grim outlook on the U.S. economy he has held over the past 25 years. Specifically, he believes that the U.S. is headed for a historic market crash, which he has termed &#8220;a greater depression,&#8221; citing rising debt and unemployment while pension funds lose money.

Despite these positives, Bitcoin may not be &#8220;out of the woods just yet,&#8221; as highly followed market analyst &#8220;PostyXBT&#8221; has <a href="https://x.com/PostyXBT/status/1914255066736845290?t=OzjCByh6SOLurj8CckqCkw&amp;s=19">warned</a> against excitement until the asset reclaims the $90,000 price level.

Real estate investor and entrepreneur Grant Cardone is raising concerns about what he sees as one of the biggest financial threats facing Americans today: the hidden cost of inflation caused by government money printing.

In a recent TikTok <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@grantcardone/video/7492144240714108203?lang=en">video</a>, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/04/44886630/grant-cardone-explains-how-the-2-7-trillion-debt-crisis-can-blow-up-the-economy-the-problem-is-so-big-it-can-drag-down-300-banks">Cardone expanded on another looming economic issue</a>: the $2.7 trillion worth of institutional debt that he says is maturing over the next 30 months.
&#8220;All of it is owned by institutions, the biggest of the big,&#8221; Cardone said. &#8220;And the problem is so big, it could drag down 300 banks and some pension funds.&#8221;

He also warned that some large government pension funds could fail as a result. "Some of these construction projects that you're seeing in downtown LA, they're going to fail," he added. "I've been predicting this would happen. I hope it doesn't."
